Failed after 15 hours of use September 5, 2008 This review is for the HD250FES-72 model, half the capacity but otherwise the same unit. Saw very little use, maybe 15 hours altogether, before failing after the one year warranty. Considerable noise and vibration while unit was working. Attempted to reach Acomdata tech support through their email route but they never responded. Acomdata is off my list. My next external drive will have a 5 year warranty.
Very fast, Very Quiet, Very Reliable... Excellent for HTPC Applications April 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been using one of these drives as a media archive and now a Timemachine backup target on a Mac Mini home theater PC setup for just over a year now. The drive was instantly accessible, very fast (even with a FW400 connection limitation) and even now at close to 80% capacity has been a solid performer. The bezel matches my Mini's case perfectly and blends in nicely on my home theater rack. I'll be adding another one of these to my rig soon to accommodate my continued music and movie archive efforts.
This review is specific to experience with Mac OS X (Tiger and Leopard, 10.4.x and 10.5.x, respectively) using the journaled HFS+ filesystem on the drive. Your mileage may vary with other OS's and disk filesystem formats.
Re: the 1-star reviewer: The annoying extras partition can be clobbered and merged into the main partition using either Disk Utility on Mac or the myriad disk partitioning apps available for PC/Windows. (I always repartition new drives before using them, just to be safe).
Very Reliable, Quiet Drive January 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have used several of these drives with my Mac and they have been wonderful. They are faster than the MyBook drives as they do not automatically go into sleep mode. The bundled software mentioned by another reviewer can be gotten rid of using any disk utility - simply format the drive before using it.
It broke after only one year!!! January 9, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Mine crashed only after a year. NO OPTION FOR REPLACEMENT! and I lost all my data. I should last longer than one year!
Useless bundled software December 7, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I get decent performance from this drive and its relatively quiet. But it has a special chip in it that allows Acomdata to reserve a portion of the drive for their own purposes. Which happen to be a bunch of useless freeware which any idiot can download from the web if they want them. Google desk top? Firefox? Thunderbird? Whats most annoying is that the cute little chip makes the reserved sectors show up as a CDrom which auto-plays almost every time you plug it in. Very annoying if you just want a large external drive and not a come on.
