4 out of 5 stars It needed to stay underground   November 15, 2008
I remember LOVING this movie as a kid. Instead of Prince Charming being the knight in shining armor, it's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfelles who turn around and save *him*... I loved Lord Malice, Sunburn and Scowl the Owl (though I could never figure out why a guy like him would hang around someone who's *that* annoying). I could tell the film was pretty rare and was obviously not made by Disney.

I think a possible point of the film was feminine power, that the princess is just as capable of rescuing the prince as the other way around. The "Shadowman" adds a hint of mystery on their journey to the Realm of Doom (I would've liked to see more of this journey, they pretty much cut to the chase which was a mistake, there could've been some real character development along the way). The owl provides comic relief and is an interesting addition to the story. And unlike the Disney version, the Magic Mirror actually has a personality.

I don't understand why Disney would cause so much conflict over Happily Ever After - the original Snow White had already been out for fifty years (it was made in 1937) and the Dwarves were NOT a Disney creation - Disney merely named them. (However, I try to replace the Dwarfelles with Dwarves and somehow it just doesn't connect, so using females was probably a better choice anyway.)

The animation was shoddy and Filmation probably did not have the budget to clean it up (they have also not produced anything since Happily Ever After's release). The songs weren't all that great, either, again a likely budget issue.

I think this movie simply would not translate well in the mainstream. That's okay - a lot of music and movies are made with real talent but they are better off found by underground gold miners than trying to "fit in". If you can let go of all Disney impressions and leave all other expectations at the door long enough to sit back and enjoy a low-budget fairy tale spinoff, you'll probably enjoy yourself. It's a cute movie with its own twists and turns mixed in.

1 out of 5 stars it's THE WORST!!!   September 1, 2008
For the 20 minutes I suffered through this with my 4 1/2 year old, for some reason I kept thinking that this was like the play that was put on by the amateur theater troupe in "Waiting for Guffman", and that somebody must have thought they were being serious when they wrote it. The song "Stools" in Guffman crossed my mind more than once. And who in the world cajoled these well known actors into these speaking roles?

The Ed Asner owl was ludicrous. Why would an owl ever be smoking cigar? And some of the jokes were slyly off color, too. Of course they were way over the head of my daughter, but I am of the opinion that even if something is over their head, they are still hearing it and getting the garbage into their little minds.

The "dwarfelles" were so dumb...why would dwarfs possess magic? and in charge of "the earth", "the thunder," etc. And what in the world was Mother Nature doing in this story? Why didn't they just add in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny too?

Finally, the animation was atrocious. It reminded me of those 70's era cheap cartoons where the characters are perfectly still while the mouths are animated.

To its credit, my daughter did like it. She was pretty sad that I turned it off, but I just couldn't stand it anymore...and I've watched a lot of awful, silly cartoons. Before you call me a shrew, please know that I drove back to the rental store and let her pick another DVD to replace this one...20 minutes each way, and she chose "The Last Unicorn" over 101 Dalmations and even the surprisingly okay Barbie As... movies.

I'm sorry for the adjectives I've used: dumb, stupid, etc. My vocabulary is usually much stronger, however, this movie really begs usage of these descriptors.

1 out of 5 stars Worst princess movie ever made   October 20, 2007
The same animation / plot / storyline can be found in the Little Mermaid cartoons. It's too scary for anyone under 5, and has virtually zero plot. The animation is very dark, and half it involves demon-like creatures and dragon that would only appeal to 7-9yr old boys... who wouldn't want to watch this movie in the first place. Disney totally missed their target audience. I'm glad we only rented it.

This movie is very funny, Owl is hilarious!
There's lot of adventure and humor, the movie is also well animated.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, come on!   April 4, 2006

Come on, it's a good movie. Sure, Lord Malice is cookie-cuter to the extreme, but it's an animated children's fairy tale, what do you expect? I actually always thought that Malice was the most frightening of all of the Disney villians (even though this isn't Disney). I was dissapointed that the original seven dwarves were nowhere to be seen, but their female cousins are cute and likable enough, espescially Thunderella and Critterena. And I know everybody hates the music, but I actually thought it was pretty good, despite the cliched lyrics in some of the songs. And the Ed Anser-voiced owl Scowl was pretty funny. Overall this is a great movie and your kids will love it. Very underrated.
