Amazon.com Thrilling and spectacular, Steep is a mesmerizing documentary in the Warren Miller mold about extreme skiing, but with more emphasis on the drive and psychology of the adrenaline-hooked athletes involved. A number of skiers are captured in archival and original footage braving the odds against surviving runs down astonishingly steep, dangerous slopes. Among the subjects is Bill Briggs, who climbed in 1971 to the top of Grand Teton in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and skied down, an unprecedented effort echoed by Europeans who later did the same thing down the French Alps in Chamonix. Doug Coombs, who twice won the World Extreme Skiing Championship, is also profiled and speaks honestly about the possibility of dying for the sake of living life to the fullest as a thrillseeker. Written and directed by Mark Obenhaus, a producer for several of the late Peter Jennings' television news specials, Steep is visually gorgeous, and literally breathtaking whenever a skier is seen barely outracing an avalanche nipping at his heels. Steep attempts, somewhat, to get inside the heads of the pros who do this sort of thing, but it is hard for many of the subjects to articulate what they feel. It's best just to be knocked out by their deeds and let the fantastic visuals in Steep speak for themselves. --Tom Keogh

documentry November 16, 2008 more of a documentry than anything. Good ideas, however much of the footage was purchased from other ski movies, hence there was a disjointed feeling often seen between segments. The doug coombs segment however was a 5 of 5. That segment made it worth owning.
Amazing Photography and Story October 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The photography all over the world is very beautiful, especially in the full HD quality. All the skiers' different stories are amazing and sometimes quite personal. I couldn't believe some of the stuff these guys have done. The combination of awe inspiring footage and the back stories of the skiers make this a great documentary about the nature and experience of extreme back country skiing.
Great Documentary July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really do think this is one of the best documentaries ever made. It has so many beautiful panorama's and insane stunts that even a non-skier would love this movie!
great doc for skiers that know July 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Blu-ray is great, but the informative story on comb's life, on it's own, made it worth it to me.
must see... June 18, 2008 This one of those movies that is a must if you love big mountain steep skiing. It covers the subject from the early days through the present. There is no time wasted in the terrain park, it's all in the really big mountains of the world. Watch it, then watch it again to see all that you missed the first time.
