The Dutch town is also home to lesser well-known yet equally glorious treats waffle style cookies known as Stroopwafels or Siroopwafels. While some people refer to these delicious waffle cookies as English Stroopwafels, they actually originated in Holland. Stroopwafels are syrup (stroop) waffles made with two paper-thin coaster sized disks sandwiched together with a layer of cinnamon-caramel syrup. They are delicious with a touch of whipped cream, a scoop of ice cream and perfect served with coffee or tea. For a real treat place a stroop wafel on top of a cup of coffee or tea and allow the cookie to warm a bit - just enough to soften the caramel filling. Stroopwafels will keep for a month in the cookie jar - longer if refrigerated or frozen.
