Bred in Finland (the name comes from a character in KALEVALA, the Finnish national epic) and fully bud-hardy to -30 degrees F, 'Pohjola's Daughter' is long-awaited by gardeners tired of losing season after season of spring blooms to late frosts and cold spells.The buds arise on this bushy, low-growing, mounded shrub in bright fuchsia-pink, then open to pale pink and mature to white with a smattering of cinnamon-brown freckles. Sweetly fragrant, each blossom is 2 to 3 inches wide. They are borne in large, rounded clusters that resemble formal bouquets all over the shrub. 'Pohjola's Daughter' is wider than it is tall, usually reaching just 3 feet high but spreading about 5 feet. Perfect for the foundation, shrub border, or even a low hedge, it thrives in sun to partial shade.
