Product Description
Rhododendron 'Jean Marie de Montague'The Hon. Jean Marie de Montague is a true gem of a Rhododendron. Often called 'Jean Marie', this classic Rhododendron is the red by which all new introductions are judged. Exceptionally long-lasting bright scarlet blooms appear mid season in clusters of 10 to 14 on dense, dome-shaped trusses, set off by emerald green foliage. 'Jean Marie' is a compact plant of thick growth habit. It is bud-hardy to -5 F and offers great sun tolerance. Excellent as a specimen or in foundation plantings, it reaches 5 feet in 10 years.Open woodland conditions are ideal for Rhododendrons. Light, well-drained, moist soil high in organics and somewhat acidic works best. Dappled shade with more sun in the north works great. Avoid excessively wet or dry soils that don't "breathe", as well as exposure to desiccating sun in the south and wind in the north. Plant shallowly and mulch- don't cultivate to retain moisture and control weeds. Rhododendrons can be pushed a zone colder, provided they are sheltered and kept covered by snow during winter cold snaps to preserve their buds, which develop the previous year.
