An excellent, interesting product! June 22, 2008 I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend's 23rd birthday and he's extremely happy with it. The herbs have begun to grow and we can't wait to eat them!
I love this gizmo! June 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought my Aerogarden about 4 months ago and have been growing the International Basil kit. My results re not perfect, but they are good and the different varieties of Basil are delicious. Like any product, is has its pros & cons. Fewer cons, so I will begin with those;
The cord is a bit short and the light is quite bright. (My husband insists it could be seen from space.) Keep it out of bedroom sightlines and it will be fine.
The replacement kits are a bit expensive as are the bulbs. (Ways to save money- watch for store coupons and buy supplies from Amazon, when they have 4-for-3 special.)
Every single plant does not grow equally well.
But the PROS far outweigh the cons for me.
First and foremost, it is designed for ease of use, and it really is very easy. Seeds are already in the pods and the plant food is in tablets, which means it is pre-measured. Plus, the machine has very noticeable blinking red lights, to remind you when to water & feed. And the plants germinate more quickly that they do in pots.
Next, many people complain that the machine is kind of expensive. Well, I have actually shopped around and hydroponics systems really are expensive. And in most cases, the lighting is sold separately. BTW, all of the bulbs for these systems are expensive. So when compared to other systems with lighting, this one is relatively cheap.
Finally, it is just plain fun to have delicious herbs at my disposal whenever I want them. They find their way into pasta, omelettes, sandwiches, etc., on a daily basis. And since my house does not get much natural light, this added light is welcome.
For Basil Lovers June 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Truly a basil lovers dream. In the Gourmet Herb kit, the basil tends to overgrow everything else. But those other herbs are not as valuable in the kitchen. Yes it is nice to be able to clip a little parsley here and there as garnish. But mint, chives, oregano and dill are not as valuable to the cook as is fresh basil. The basil does really well in the AeroGarden and there is really no comparison between dried and fresh basil. So if you appreciate having fresh basil at your fingertips, you will certainly enjoy the AeroGarden.
I wanted to love this thing June 10, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I did all the right things. Even the crappy thing about having to buy their expensive bulbs after six months. That REALLY sucks at 30 bucks a pop. I really wanted this to work because I really, really love tomatoes. I thought that I had finally found a way to get them into my kitchen without having to go to a market or putter over a patch of soil for a few months up here in northern Illinois.
I got this thing originally with the herb kit. Worked okay with that. I moved and decided to try the cherry tomatoes. I freaked out when they didn't decide to sprout in the time designated. Called the company and in the meantime, they sprouted. I wasn't very happy with the results since then. I got some tomatoes, but, let's be quite honest here. I don't care how much nutrient you put into the water, they'll never, ever, taste as good as a tomato raised in DIRT!
I actually considered buying one of those things that grows plants upside down when I finally figured out that none of this crap works. My best bet is an earth box that actually uses real stuff to grow things.
Just to let you know, my unit quit circulating water yesterday. I've had it for less than 2 years now. I've had to replace the bulbs in it twice( I think Aero recommends every six months, do you think that's economical at 20 bucks a pop?) I've been fortunate enough to be able to put my garden in a very bright place in my house along with a couple of other plants that I bought. They are still thriving.
Update 6/20/08 I called the customer service after completely disassembling the unit and trying to clean all the crud out of the motor. It still didn't work after trying to force a solution of CLR and water through it. Still didn't work. Customer service was very helpful and informed me I could buy a new motor for 10 bucks plus tax and shipping. I haven't received it yet, So I can't say that this is a successful fix. I did want to upgrade my rating for this item because the customer service, whether by email or phone is very good.
City dweller's dream come true June 10, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've always entertained the idea of growing my own produce at home, but I was never able to because I don't have access to an outdoor area. The Aerogarden lets me grow the herbs and vegetables that I want without needing an actual garden. I was also surprised at how fast the herbs grew as well. I saw sprouts in 5 days, and I was using fresh herbs within 2 weeks. Oh, and did I mention that it's extremely easy.
