Amazon.com Product Description
The Coleman 5053A751 ProCat Portable Catalytic Propane Heater with Electronic Ignition provides consistent heat where no other sources are available without the danger of open flames. Whether you need a backup heater for power outages or want to heat a garage, shop, tent, boat, or ice shanty, this cordless heater for indoor use is ready to go wherever you might need some warmth.

Constructed with 3,000 BTU output, the catalytic heater with platinum technology provides flameless heat from a pressure-regulated propane fuel system that produces a steady fuel stream, even in cold weather, at high altitudes, or when fuel is low. The starting mechanism is a fast-acting piezoelectric sparker that ignites the propane in the presence of atmospheric O2. Easy to operate, you simply screw a 16.4-ounce propane cylinder on the back, turn the knob to "on" for a few seconds, and hit the ignition switch. The portable heater moves the heat efficiently with a fan, powered by two D batteries (not included), for better circulation. The Coleman ProCat operates for up to eight hours on 16.4-ounce Coleman propane cylinder.

About Coleman
The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Inventor of the hugely popular fold-up camp stove, Coleman developed a plastic liner for his galvanized steel coolers in 1957--the birth of the modern cooler--and the company has been improving their utility and design ever since. The array of products that bear the Coleman name now includes just about everything you might need to work or play outdoors, from tents and sleeping bags to boats, backpacks, and furniture.

1 out of 5 stars Illegal in California - H&S.C. Sec. 19881(a).   September 28, 2008
4 out of 8 found this review helpful

This product cannot legally be sold in California under California Health & Safety Code Section 19881(a), which states ""No person shall sell, or offer for sale, any new or used unvented heater that is designed to be used inside any dwelling house or unit, with the exception of an electric heater, or decorative gas logs for use in a vented fireplace." [emphasis supplied] The ProCat Model 5053's U.S. Patent No. 6,470,876 openly states ""[t]he heater assembly of the present invention can be used as a portable space heater for a variety of locations including...homes...", i.e., is "designed" for use in dwelling houses. The heater has a history of spontaneously bursting into flame and melting down (its ABS plastic casing melts down at barely above the boiling temp of water), likely from ignition of regulator gas leaks, in separate documented house fires in Cleveland, Ohio (1/26/04), Waukegan, Illinois (3/15/05), and Southern California (12/30/05). The California fire catastrophically burned a child almost to death. Home Depot told Coleman it had stopped carrying these heaters in its California stores in December, 2005, in compliance with a stop-sale demand from the Sacramento County District Attorney. Despite knowledge of its illegality, Coleman continues to sell these heaters in California illegally directly on its own website, through Amazon (which likely is unaware of this law), and through small retailers.

5 out of 5 stars Most excellent tent heater   September 11, 2008
I have used this tent heater for two seasons, now. Marvelous. I am a human icicle and even with a warm sleeping bag, I need additional heat if the temp drops into the 50's. I leave this heater on all night--really. The carbon-mono detector has never beeped!
One tent is nearly all screens; even with the rain fly in place, I've had no problems with carbon-mono. The four-season tent is almost too warm in the late fall; yet, no carbon-mono problems all night long!
Yes, some flames do jump when first ignited. I will use one propane tank after another--no problems what-so-ever. The D-cell batts for the fan run amazingly long for me.
One downside is its size and another is no temp control. Yet, that's a small inconvenience for such comfort--especially for we freezie-cats!

5 out of 5 stars procat   July 13, 2008
I went camping with my family up in Big Bear Ca and this heater worked great! I used one bottle of gas before I left the house to get rid of the burning smell. I love it and wouldnt go camping without it. Easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Heater!!!!!   July 7, 2008
I used this for the first time and was impressed. It got so warm that my family asked that I turn it off. It was approximately 48 degrees outside of the tent. I was happy to know how well this heater works. No mountain camping trip will be without it now.

4 out of 5 stars Good Emergency Heater   May 22, 2008

I just bought this heater for camping and emergency purposes. Out of the box it is nice, compact and lightweight. Has a nice handle and base. When first trying to start it I had a hard time getting the "insta-light" to work. The owners manual says 10 clicks it took me more than 40. It did smoke a little and smelled alot but I burned it outdoors for 30 min like the manual said to and now there is no smoke or odor after lighting for the 3rd time. It is still hard to light but I am going to leave it on for a min or two and let the gas build up and see if that works better. It gives off really good heat! It has no up or down so it is hot all the time, but for what I need it for that is ok. I have a VW Pop Top Camper that it warms up quite nicely in about 3-5 min. The heater really needs a good case to protect it. I bought the soft-sided case that Coleman has for it but was not impressed. It will do but...it is too big for the heater. There is 2 propane bottle holders inside but the heater is not snug inside therefore the bottles may actually damage the heater. Also the base does not have a holder so it just goes in the bag and may also get damaged by the heavy bottles. If you are going to use the carry bag I would suggest packing it all in nicely with cardboard and packing material of some kind like bubble wrap so it all fits better. Coleman should have made a hard sided case for this heater.
