4 out of 5 stars great purchase helps energy reality   October 12, 2008
I bought the Kill-A-Watt EZ to better understand where my electrical energy $$ were being used. While there were some surprises, good and bad, what this device really helped me do was to take a critical look at what wastes my money. A nice surprise was my fairly new refridgerator (4 to 5 yr old Sears); it only costs $65.00 per year. Another surprise, a bad one, was how much it costs to have my VCR, TV, DVD, and cable box turned off but lights or LEDs still on; $36.00 per year. I now have a surge protector and turn everything off at bedtime. Lights and lamps can be a big energy waster. If you pay 10 cents per killowatt it means for every 10 hours a 100watt lamp is on it costs you 10 cents. The new CFL bulbs reduce that cost to 3 cents. Running a faucet till the water is hot, mainly out of habit, is a great waste of money, especially when cold water hand washing works just fine. The main point is that having this meter answers questions and makes you think about your energy use and waste. I like everything about this Kill-A-Watt meter except the display could be a little brighter, hence only a 4-star rating. I recommend it for many reasons.

5 out of 5 stars it works and pretty accurate too.   October 10, 2008
The price is right on this little gadget. I agree with prior reviews saying a "backlight" would really help (Yeah, a flashlight is an option but where is it when you need it.).I tested mine with a 60 watt bulb, read 61 watts. Close enough.Found that my computer power factor (efficiency) is 74% contributing to dirty power, my new refrigerator power cost is $4.80 / month @ .16 per KWH.
Well worth it considering other meters are $78, $155, and $300 for a similar item.
Buy it, learn to use it, you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars As advertised, works well   October 9, 2008
I bought this product to charge my Electric vehicle and get an idea of how much electricity I'm using for a given trip. It works very well and I've not seen any problems as of yet. I did not go through the checking and calibration procedures as others have because I simply need an idea and am not selling KWH's. The instructions are very lame but with a little fumbling around in the basic menus it's real easy to figure out. I agree with several other postings that a back up battery would be nice to view data when it's unplugged but that would only add to the price. A cheap lamp extension cord at the bench could act as a data reader when not in use. Very nice little gadget. Buy one, you'll not regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Great product, but a few changes would make it excellent   October 9, 2008
This product works just as advertised and I am really happy with the information it provides. There are a few easy modifications that would really make it much better. It needs to be back lighted. I have to use a flashlight to see it in most cases. It could also use a 3 foot cord so it would be easier to access. Also in today's world many places use timed rates and this does not account for that but overall it gave me the info I needed even if I had to provide light a little math to figure my cost on a timed basis.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, but not perfect   October 6, 2008

Very useful for determining the amount of energy used by major appliances. I like the fact that it keeps track of total energy consumption and uses the actual energy cost to forecast the cost of operation. This information is very useful when targeting appliances to reduce energy consumption. It is also useful for evaluating how successful I am at reducing energy consumption.

I don't like the fact that the LCD does not have a backlight, and that the display can only be read while the unit is plugged in. I have to get on the floor to read it. The unit also blocks both outlets.

I recommend getting a couple of extension cords and using this device "in line". Use one cord from the kill-a-watt to the wall, so that it's easier to read, then another cord from the kill-a-watt to your appliance (not needed if your appliance has a long enough cord).
