Best for smooth terrain November 12, 2008 Ummm. This is the 3rd Topeak Beam Rack that I have owned. The other 2 have broken at the weld joints. The first two probably lasted a total of 3 years and about 6000 miles. You may ask, why do they break and why do I keep buying? Well, I think that they break because while I use this rack on my commuter bike, my riding style may be better considered urban mountain biking. Riding down sets of stairs is a common occurence and, in the end, this riding style seems to put too much stress on the welds, I guess. I keep buying new racks because the Topeak pack that goes with the rack is quite good and cost a significant chunk of change itself. So, we'll see how long this 3rd one lasts. Next time though - I know a guy who builds custom steel frame bikes and he may be best able to help me out.
In summary, if you are going to use this on smooth terrain it is an excellent investment. I have had no problems with the quick release mechanism, since once I put it on I never took it off. If you are going to be bouncing around alot, then it may be worth doing a little more research and evaluating other options. Ride On.
on selecting the right frame version October 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The mount looks great and works great with the Topeak bags that are designed for it. I bought the side frames also because I got the EXP bag with panniers. The rack mounts pretty fast and easy to your seat post and the frame supports also go on pretty quick. I also put the MTX fender on, which I wasn't sure would go on with the pannier frame. It all integrates perfectly. I am going to post a picture soon. Make sure you put it on tight and realize it is really a commuter rack. If you are using it while hitting rough trails on a mountain bike expect it to shift around some if you have much loaded on it. As for frame selection I chose the A frame and it was an incorrect decision for me and so exchanged it for the V. I was afraid the V frame would sit too close to my tire with the fender on so I opted for a high set up. You should try to mount it low so as not to raise the center of gravity or battle the weight of the filled bag. The reason for the A frame is if your mounting it on a small bike with a low seat with little clearance from seat to tire. The equivalent of a BMX bike. The E frame should work for a lot to play it safe including road and mountain bikes. The V frame will work on quite a few as long as the tire isn't too big. I have a 26" mountain bike tire and it sits a few inches from the tire. Oh if you have a wedge under you seat you can probably keep it on but it is a tight fit. So far I love the look and other than one incident of it shifting have loved the performance. Trunk Rack September 23, 2008 Great rack. Simple, yet effective. I like the quick release function; easy on and off but stable when in place.
Easy to install, use September 23, 2008 Easy to install, I needed to add some shim, not a problem. Works GREAT with my MTX trunk. Added panier support to it also. Good for day rides or trips to the store.
Great Frame - Make sure to select the correct Configuration July 13, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
You NEED to make sure to select the correct configuration for this frame. I am switching this between a Giant XTC2 and a Trek Road bike. I lucked out with my configuration, but others may not be so lucky.
