Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good cord, but the spec's aren't entirely accurate   April 20, 2008
I bought two of the cords and one was defective. While extending or retracting the cord, it would short and the current would stop flowing. Grizzly sent a UPS call tag and sent me new unit. The time from reporting the problem until I received the new one was about 3 weeks.
The cord itself is a nice heavy duty unit and the retractable cord itself is 12AWG, but the little 4' section that connects the reel to the outlet is 14AWG. Not a big deal unless your going to be running high amps, but it seems senseless to cut corners like that for such a minute piece of cord. That's the reason for my rating reduction.

5 out of 5 stars Works well so far...   July 7, 2007

Cord is nice and heavy. I mounted mine on the ceiling of my garage and it sucks the cord right back up.

FYI-No mounting hardware (other than pictured) is included.

This is a good product that could benefit from more spring tension on the cord reel. For the price it is a steal.

5 out of 5 stars Self contained cord reel   January 19, 2007

This is a built tough product of sturdy construction and hard to find 12 guage wire. High amperage rating, weather resistant with a strong mounting assembly. Good Buy! Great Price!

4 out of 5 stars Terrific value in a 15 amp auto-rewind cord reel   December 17, 2005

Our garage has had a Grizzly H5695 Cord Reel, for several years.

Pros:

1. The cord pulls out easily and locks into place when you stop pulling. It never rewinds "by itself". Like all such reels, you have to pull the cord until the reel reaches a lockable place, every couple of feet or so. It's designed to be left plugged into a wall outlet at all times.

2. The cord has the ideal wire size (12/3; 12 gauge, 3 wire) if you might use a 15 amp tool, or might use 15 amps in total. E.g., plug my 15-amp sliding compound saw into a 30-foot, 14 gauge extension cord, and the saw blade runs noticeably slower. This is because the reduced amperage capacity of 14 gauge wire can't provide enough juice for the saw's motor.

3. ALL of the cord automatically retracts easily - just tug on the wire to get it started - very little giggling to get the last few feet into the case. The rewind spring has a just-right tension.

4. The reel swivels freely from side to side, based on from where its wire is being pulled.

5. Has three grounded outlets.

6. Amazing value for the money, considering other 12/3 cord reels cost MUCH more. For example, consider the Reelcraft L-4545-123-3 Electric Cord Reel with 45' of 12/3 cord - no doubt an outstanding unit, but it costs FIVE times as much. (When comparing prices on electric cord reels, note that 12 gauge wire costs more than 14 gauge, and 14 is more than 16.)

Cons:

1. Even though the cord itself is 12AWG, the short leader cord that plugs into a receptacle is only 14AWG. That's a dumb way for Grizzly to save a buck or so.

2. One of my cord's three outlets has a too loose connection with some plugs.

Summary:

If I had a business where the cord reel would be used all day, every day, I'd probably get the Reelcraft or other professional unit. For occasional home use, the Grizzly is a terrific value, and it works as you'd expect.
