Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen
3-inch screen

and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen
4.3-inch screen
Widescreen -- See Better, See More
The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

FM Transmitter -- Hear Better, Hear More
Instead of straining your ears to hear turn-by-turn directions or your favorite MP3s, you can enjoy wireless FM audio transmission via the nüvi 660's wireless FM transmitter. Tune your car's radio to the appropriate station and you'll hear all the nüvi's audio, including voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle's stereo system. The nüvi 660 includes many "must-have" entertainment and travel tools, including digital music and audio book playback, JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, and more. All these great features make the nüvi 660 a complete Personal Travel Assistant.

First Rate Map Data
The nüvi 660 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

In addition, the nüvi 660 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store.

Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nüvi 660's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

Integrated FM Traffic Receiver

TMC traffic service coverage map
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with purchase of this device. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website.

Easy To Use Interface
Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use

Beyond Navigation

Browse your stored pictures with an easy-to-use JPEG viewer.
MP3 PlayerA handy MP3 player lets you play songs stored on SD memory cards. nüvi 250W accepts custom points of interest (POIs). View larger.

Navigation is just the beginning. The nüvi 660 features travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, MP3 player, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map.

This device is compatible with optional content plug-ins available via SD card, such as the Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs

Garmin has also added the ability for customers to add custom points of interest (POI's) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Portable GPS   May 17, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I have owned several GPS devices over the past several years and the NUVI 660 is, by far, the best and easiest I have ever used. Better even than the built-in units in my wife's 2006 Toyota Avalon and my 2007 Corvette. If you buy this NUVI you will not be sorry. I just bought another NUVI 660 to give to my son who recently started a new job that requires some car traveling. He has used it for about a month now and said he just loves it. Also, Amazon has a very good price on this GPS.

5 out of 5 stars Almost excellent (1/4 star off due to insufficient battery life)   May 16, 2008
A very simple review from me.
- It works out of the box for the first time user.
- Intuitive user interface.
- Battery life is insufficient (as with most products).
- Cost between 285 - 350 might be a little steep at first sight, but i think it is worth the money esp. if Garmin can inc. more maps or allow users to configure 2 sets of maps minimum.
- A better quality plastic could be considered for the next revision.

4 out of 5 stars First time GPS car navigation user   May 16, 2008
I am not new to GPS. I am a geographer by training and have used handheld devices for years.

I received this as a gift for an upcoming trip. It is then going to become the 'family' car navigation unit as we have a parent coming to live with us new to the area.

I have had it less than a week but these are my impressions. I would go with a 4.3 inch screen. The buttons are easier to use and the unit is easier to see. I would buy the dashboard bean bag mount. I found about it after I had ordered it but got it before the unit was delivered. Easy to use once you know to pull out the original mounting unit at the rotating ball. It doesn't seem like it would stay put but it does.

Register your product. I just got done installing the 2009 map update. Time consuming but straight forward. Ironically the first use I tried was to find a local home cooking restaurant I had been wanting to try but did not know where it was. I had heard it burnt down but that was a couple of years ago. However the 2008 map took us to the burnt down location. I just checked, the 2009 has the correct address.

And that brings me to ease of use. Very easy to use. Many search options and it has a very intelligent fill in the blank feature. Once it can narrow something down to a few choices it displays the likely streets for instance without you having to type more. In my limited use the one I was looking for always displayed.

It is very accurate. The bluetooth is a nice feature and just took seconds on each of our phones to set up. I have not tried it in pedistrain mode but that will be nice for vacations where you are walking.

The reason I did not give it 5 stars is I would like a unit to was both useful for hiking and geo-cacheing but also a good navigation unit. Does not seem to quite exist either way yet.

But Garmin is the leader for a reason. I am sure most companies can build a unit that can receive a signal and fix your location. After that it comes down to unit interface including screen quality and then accessing options, quality of the maps and the POI database, and need and usefulness of 'extras'.

I have tried audible in the past and may do so again. MP3 and picture viewing not very important. Bluetooth will be useful. So far I am enjoying the product a lot. It has now come down in price enough to justify it I feel at least on a family basis. Will we use it every day? No. Will we use it every week? No. Will we use it every month? Probably.

Going to a party, trying a new restaurant you might not because you do not know where it is, traveling. And also being a good host if someone visits you from out of town and they want to explore on their own.

In fact I am liking it enough I will probably get a handheld one at some point soon for hiking, camping, and geocacheing. Note this one will accept coordinates but I have not tried that yet. Also a note it is actually bulkier than I expected it to be. Wider and of course bigger than units with smaller screens. So those dimensions I can not fault, it is pretty wide though. It does get a fix quickly as well.

All in all a good unit. If you end up buying one, buy the dash beanbag mount. Register it. Download the 2009 maps. Note it is a 2 gig download and then it did take close to a couple of hours after that to install. So start early on a weekend or make it a 2 day project. Very easy to install and the 'Garmin Garage' extra screen icons are fun to play with and easy to update.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin 660 is a Consumer Reports top rated GPS   May 15, 2008
6 out of 6 found this review helpful

I purchased this GPS after reading an in-depth review in PC Magazine. After purchasing the Garmin 660 for a cross country trip, I later discovered that it is also listed in the June 08 issue of Consumer Reports Canada. It's # 2 on the list (Garmin 760 is #1) out of 39 GPS navigators reviewed. The rating was 82 for the 660 (same as the 760), but for some reason the 660 is listed with a battery life of one hour greater than the 760 (at 4.5 hours.) It's always nice to confirm that indeed independent testing also validated my choice.

One of the main selling features for me was price. The Amazon price was 1/2 of what I would pay for the same unit in Canada, and even other US retailers had it listed for substantially higher than the Amazon price. Bravo to Amazon.com for listing the unit at an affordable price for the consumer. When this unit first came out 2 years ago, it was Garmin's top of the line consumer model and listed for $1000.00.

The unit is very easy to use with the larger screen size. Input is easy and I found that it was very useful when entering a new city to view the pre-programmed listings of restaurants, lodging, and gas stations in advance so that I could navigate directly to them. The wireless transmitter broadcast the directions over my car stereo, and the built-in MP3 player was nice and when directions needed to be transmitted to me, the unit muted the MP3 player and provided the voice directions.

Some features such as the travel guide require additional purchases from Garmin, so for those that want all of the features active, you will have to dish out some more money if you want these. As is the unit is well equipped and seems to calculate a reasonable route to take.

The mounting bracket works very well and is very secure on the windshield. Make sure you place the antenna parallel to the earth, as that is what Garmin says is the correct orientation. Overall, for the price I paid though Amazon.com, and the use of the unit to navigate across Canada, I feel that I received a great GPS unit that is both portable and accurate.

I now have four Garmin 660's,great product at a very nice price. Does everything I need very well, except for a few odd routings that obviously are not correct, in that you are urged to take somewhat weird routes to get to a destination.
