What sets this sander apart from the ever-growing pack of random orbitals is Bosch's new Microfilter dust filtration system, which the maker says will trap particles 60 times smaller than a human hair. Eight dust ports on the pad surface extract the material up into the filter, keeping it out of your lungs. The sander itself, a palm model, is relatively lightweight and comfortable in hand, thanks to the ergonomic soft grip, yet the 2.2 amp motor will power rotations from 7,000 to 12,000 RPM with a turn of the speed adjustment dial. The variable speeds offer you a range of applications, from serious stock removal all the way up to fine finishing. Bosch says it's swirl free, but you'll still want to use caution when starting up to avoid those swirl marks. It's inexpensive enough for the home do-it-yourselfer or hobby woodworker to own one, yet we can easily see this in a professional shop with Bosch's long life and superior quality.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

2 out of 5 stars Try something else   August 26, 2008
I bought 2 of these mainly for the name I had not used one before. Not very happy with it. The dust canister leaks like a seive. It is pretty much useless for dust collection and it is hard to get the latches to stay closed and it falls off sometimes. the sanding pad for some reason only cuts at the edge of the pad. It is like the pad is cupped it also vibrates more than the Makita or Dewalt I have used. I won't buy this brand again.

4 out of 5 stars Good sander, few flaws   August 14, 2008
When I had decided to become a woodworking hobbyist, I spent about 6+ months doing nothing but review tools. My goal was simple: find quality tools that I could learn with, make decent furniture with, would last me at least a couple years while I learned, and most importantly would not break the bank.

I am still learning, I don't have a couple years under my (or my tools) belt yet, and I have build a few projects (mostly shop items.) Although it has only been a few things I have built, I have used all the tools I purchased. One of those tools is the Bosch 1295DVSK Random Orbital Sander. I can tell already, with minimal use, that some of the negative things said in other reviews are true but then again so are most the positives. The sander does have a slight wobble when you initially start it up - this could potentially damage a fine piece of wood. Bosch does sell softer sanding pads that would help minimize this effect. The dust "bag"/filter isn't all that it's cracked up to be but then again, there aren't many tools that have a great catch all dust bag - filter system. If you use it frequently, buy the optional vacuum attachment and hook that up. The sander also doesn't make good use of the center of the sandpaper with its "nickel-sized" hole and I could see it ripping out on corners but honestly, who would use a power tool like this to sand/round edges or corners and expect good results either on your work piece or your equipment?? Don't be afraid to use a little elbow grease...But I digress...

This tool has more positive than negative. The on/off switch is easy to reach, the sander feels good in the hands, and the variable speed makes working with different woods possible. If you are looking for a good quality ROS that will give you above average results that is not going to break the bank then buy the Bosch 1295DVSK. If you are doing this for a living or working in your shop 30+ hours a week then buy the Festool Rotex RO 150 FEQ......for $475

5 out of 5 stars superior dust control   June 7, 2008
Only sander that actually has great dust control that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. Just keep the pleated filter clean with your air compressor and dump the dust after every project.

The only better sander would be the festool ones with powered vac to match but I can't justify that for my shop. THIS IS A GREAT ALTERNATIVE.

1 out of 5 stars works for awhile   May 25, 2008

Bought two of these based on recommendations from others. I am a boat builder and use these sanders three days/week. First the hook pads went out on them requiring new ones at $20/each after 6mos usage. Then the motor on one went out requiring replacement in the warranty period. Can't use either of them now and they will both require repair. They worked great while they lasted but didn't last too long.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sander, very pleased   March 24, 2008

I've had this sander for about a year now, have used it extensively for several types of projects and media. Very happy with it. It is well made and performs very well.

I feel I should comment about some of the reviews that I see here that complain about the dust collector filling up too quickly or not doing very well when sanding drywall. This is to be expected! Sanding drywall mud generates an enormous amount of dust, most of it very fine and very abrasive. The little dust collector doohickey thing is not going to be able to keep up, and it will fail in short order. But you can't blame the sander. The ONLY way to use this sander on sheetrock is if you connect a Shop-Vac to it via the vacuum port. But even that can clog your vacuum filter in a short time. If you are sanding a small area, like a patch, then this is fine. But for sanding an entire room of new drywall, this is not a good choice. You are better off renting one of those huge Porter-Cable drywall sanders, they are designed for this type of project. Or, do what I have done, put on old clothes and a hat, don a respirator mask (NOT a dust mask), then put a huge fan in one window of the room, open all the other windows and close the door. Then get one of those big sanding pads with the pole and the open-cell paper, and go to town.

Before I bought this sander I couldn't see what good it would be to have variable speed, but now that I've used it quite a bit on lots of projects, I'm really glad I have that feature. I don't find the variable speed control hard to adjust, in fact I like that it stays put at the speed where you set it.

My only complaint with this sander is that I had to order the vacuum attachment as a seperate item. This should be included with the sander, and the case should provide space for it. It's really hard to get everything in the case with the dust collector and extra discs, this thing makes it worse, but it is doable. I actually have yet to use my dust collector, I always use my vacuum with it.
