Amazon.com Review Providing myriad options, this automatic bread maker embodies the marvels of 21st century electronic convenience and choice. Yes, it mixes, kneads, rises, and bakes bread in three loaf sizes up to 2-1/2 pounds. But its digital controls go much further, offering settings for white, whole wheat, multigrain, and French (crisp crust, open texture) breads, each made according to what's best for that particular style. Other settings permit rapid baking and baking sandwich bread with a soft crust. For raisin (or other dried-fruit) bread, a beeper signals when to add the fruit so it's not crushed during kneading. Crust color--dark or light--can be selected as well. The machine automatically adds yeast at the proper time from a dispenser on the unit's lid. It also bakes non-yeast, quick breads-- like banana and gingerbread--and sweet cakes. And it mixes, kneads, and rises doughs for pizza, focaccia, croissants, and other pastries without baking them. A timer permits the machine to be programmed up to 13 hours in advance so fresh bread or cake is available for breakfast or dinner. For cleanup convenience, the baking pan is nonstick. Clad in metal and packing 550 watts of power, the machine measures 14 inches wide, 13.5 inches high, and 9 inches deep. Its instruction booklet is exceptionally easy to understand and includes recipes for 40 breads and doughs along with an insightful guide to baking basics and illustrated tips for making pastries. --Fred Brack

A Perfect bread machine October 7, 2008 This is an awesome bread machine... my grandmother recommended it to me and she knows what she is talking about! I have made about a half a dozen loaves so far and they come out GREAT. I personally like making bread with the light crust setting but I guess it really depends on the particular loaf you are making. Love all the settings. [...]
disappointing bread machine October 6, 2008 I purchased the Panasonic bread machine based on the good reviews that I read here. I have owned 2 Breadman machines in the past and was happy with them until they wore out. I expected this machine to produce the same quality bread and was very disappointed. The loaves from my favorite recipes came out small and hard and did not taste the same. The crust was very tough. The recipes in the book were MUCH too salty and we tried several loaves before giving up and sending it back. I've noticed from the other reviews that the people who had owned bread machines from the past (when they actually made machines that were good quality and made good bread) are all disappointed with the new machines. I agree. Why did so many companies make changes to good products and turn them into bad ones?
Panasonic quality that consistently turns out beautiful, delicious loaves of bread. October 3, 2008 I am very happy that I relied on the all these positive reviews and bought this bread machine (to replace a Breadman-brand machine that had after six years developed a leaking seal). Since this machine arrived two weeks ago, I have baked five loaves of bread (four white and one whole-wheat), and all the loaves have turned out perfectly beautiful and delicious. I could not be more pleased. The loaves are nicely domed on top, and the texture is even throughout (unlike the loaves baked in the Breadman, which were always denser on the bottom and fluffier on top.) The crust is even in color and crackly-delicious.
I just love that this machine has the option of baking an extra-large, 2.5-pound loaf, which lets me save on energy-use. No other home bread machine I have seen makes such a large loaf.
Also, it is amazing how quietly this machine operates. The first time I had the machine on and the paddle started kneading (after a silent resting period), I was standing in the kitchen three feet away from the machine, heard a faint repeating hum, and thought that there was something happening down my street -- it's that quiet!
I am delighted to find that the rubber feet on the machine do work: the machine does not vibrate enough to "walk" while kneading (as my old Breadman did), so it can safely stay on my countertop during operation (unlike my Breadman, which I had to put on the floor).
Some reviews have said that measuring flour and water by volume instead of weight lead to poor results, but I have used volume measurements on all the loaves and every loaf has turned out perfectly -- no problems at all. I even tried varying the amount of flour in a recipe by 1/4 cup to test "tolerance" for inaccurate measurement, and the loaves still came out perfectly, with no noticeable variation from the loaf made with strict attention to measurement.
Lastly, I bought this for a mere $119.99 on sale from Amazon.com, so it is a excellent value. This is Panasonic quality at an excellent price. I highly recommend this bread machine!
Panasonic Bread Maker September 27, 2008 Panasonic SD-YD250 Automatic Bread Maker I like this product. Bakes various loaf sizes and different bread types. Has several menu options.
Returned for Zojirushi BBCCX20 Bread Machine September 24, 2008 I followed recipes exactly to the weight measurements and either ended up with full failures or extremely dense loaves. I returned for the Zojirushi instead. Well worth the cost difference.
