The wide 21-inch diameter funnel swallows leaves as fast as you can feed them, mincing them down to fine mulch. This little unit is surprisingly powerful, and at only 17 pounds it's so light you can mount it atop a trash can or bungee-cord a plastic bag to the outfeed and collect the waste. Out of the box, it goes together literally in minutes with just a screwdriver. The hopper tilts to 45 degrees to make loading easier, and the sliding control lever is easy to read, with settings for grass, thatch, wet leaves, dry leaves and pine needles. Double cutting lines are powered by an 8-amp motor on regular household current, and the motor intake filter comes out easily for cleaning. A built-in storage compartment keeps extra line at the ready, and changing cutter lines is easy.  Problem with motor September 3, 2008
This was my second shredder from the same company. The original had a different stand that isn't great, but the machine still works well after possibly a dozen years.
I then sort-of upgraded to this model. Soon after the warrantee was up I had electrical problems. The motor had a breaker the first model didn't have. I contacted a very nice lady who said I could cut out and splice the breaker wires. I did and the motor burnt out.
It was out of warrantee and I went back to the old shredder which I'm happy to say is still doing fine. I don't know if all units have this problem, but it was a bummer this newer model didn't last half as long as my original shredder. The concept is great for compacting leaves for disposal or for use in gardens.
 Substitute For Flowtron Mulcher August 31, 2008
After reading all the reviews I decided to put a load of pine needles in my 30 gallon waste can and use my Black & Decker line trimmer. It worked pretty well especially as the can filled up with mulch. No expense on my part since I already have a weed eater ( Black & Decker). Now I just need to do a little refinement such as a Lid for dust and particle containment and possibly some sort of a screen at the bottom so the mulch just falls through when it gets fine enough. Something to think about before spending $ 135.00 plus shipping for something that probably doesn't work much better. In addition you don't have to do any feeding of leaves, just dump them in the barrel and wack em.

This mulcher is indespensible for the gardener who takes composting and mulching seriously. Breaking down leaves accelerates the composting process the the mulched leaves is perfect for flower beds. I have put mine through two seasons of hard work and recently purchased another one to give away as a raffle prize at an annual community gardeners event.
A great alternative for commercial mulch August 2, 2008
The use of commercial mulches it seems to me has become maniacally compulsive. I find the "leaf eater" a wonderful alternative whose results have benefitted my gardens greatly.
shreds well August 1, 2008
The Flowtron shreds well as long as you take care to not over fill and stop frequently to shift material away from the sides. It is not a chipper so you can't get away with woody stems or sticks but on soft material it works just fine.
