Garmin nüvi 275/275T 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic July 21, 2010 Benjamin Cheong (Cleveland, OH United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just returned from a trip in Ireland 3 days ago. The routes provide by the GPS were very accurate indeed and without the system, I would definitely be lost. Map update was easy (took 1-2 hours). I am glad I brought this little gadget. Highly recommend.
Beware the updates July 20, 2010 Alan Eisner After purchasing the nuvi 275t, I attempted to "update" the maps online, using a Windows 7 computer. I was never able to get it to work, notwithstanding several well-meaning emails from the tech people. The updating software hung and nothing we could do would cause it to work properly. Out of desperation, after literally 15+ hours of failure on the Windows 7 machine, I accomplished the process on a windows xp netbook.
Now some unsettling information for you to consider:
My Nuvi 2775t came with "2010" maps for North America and Eurpope. However, after correspondence with the tech people, I discovered that the so-called 2010 maps were created in April 2009. Therefore, the updates I just downloaded were as of April 2010 and called "2011" maps. Anyone thinking they got free upgrades is deluded. All these updates do is make the maps current instead of old.
Lastly, when I first tried to download, only one of the two maps on my machine were offered. Had I not contacted tech, I would have only been able to update 1 of the 2 maps.
All in all, the map update process was misleading and downright unusable.
Oh yes, the updates each took over 3 hours to complete.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln..............
Good in the USA, but terrible in Europe July 16, 2010 Frank Hunt (Plano, Texas USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased the Nuvi 275T because is has the European and USA maps loaded. I was expecting to use this device as I walked through the streets of Barcelona, Spain.
Other than being used for a clock (it grabs the time from satellites), I found this device to be utterly useless. I was there for a week and about 80% of the time I could not get a lock on the satellites in order to locate my poistion. In order to clear things up, there wasn't a cloud in the sky the whole trip and I attempted to obtain a lock on my position while outside.
On the few occasions that I was able to obtain a GPS lock, it worked great. I think the main issue with this device is that it has too weak of a signal to be a handheld device. Oddly though, it seems to work great in the USA. Perhaps it's because our buildings are more spread out here.
Pretty Solid GPS July 10, 2010 arovino 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As this unit came preloaded with USA and European maps, I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 275T specifically for a 10 day long trip to Spain, during which I would drive over 1200 miles. Overall this GPS unit made life significantly easier than reading maps. It was rock solid 90% of the time, with on point directions, ETA, and ease of use. In fact it probably saved me several hundred Euros/Dollars in speeding tickets as it warned of upcoming photo radar check points, not that I recommend disobeying local driving laws of course! (FYI I have no idea if it does this in the US as well.)
However when there were hiccups, they were frustrating:
1.) Often European cities will close down numerous streets in the old sections of the downtown district in the evening for pedestrians. In Leon, Spain it was impossible to get the Garmin to show us alternative routes that were not closed by barriers. After 45 minutes of frustrating dead ends by barriers, we turned the Garmin off and found a way around the barriers to the hotel by old fashioned reading skills and gut instinct. Needs a more comprehensive alternative route suggestions.
2.) In the eastern plains of Valladolid, Spain the Garmin suddenly "lost the satellite". This in spite of the fact that we were in open plains, with no trees, mountains or buildings to block the signal. In total the signal was lost for over an hour. We found our destination by using my iphone. What can I say, this seemed ridiculous as there was no natural or artificial terrain to block the signal, further coupled by the fact that my iphone was spot on.
3.) Driving through the mountains outside of San Sebastian, the Garmin lost signal again for over 30 minutes. This I can understand considering there were numerous mountains, tunnels and trees to block the signal. However yet again the iphone was somehow able to maintain a signal and map out a route. However the cost of downloading megabytes overseas makes the Google maps iphone app a very expensive option .
Disclosure: did not use the mp3, picture or Bluetooth options, I'm sure they can add value to the product.
FYI--I did use the Garmin on a recent drive through the Four Corners area and it executed flawlessly.
Overall I would recommend this device particularly for driving in Europe as most of the time it delivers a stress free experience!
I love my Garmin July 9, 2010 Virginia Baxter I just returned from a trip to Europe. I have rented a car many times and even rented a GPS last year. Since the rental complanies charge 25 Euro per day, I decided it would be best to buy one. The Garmin 275 was perfect except for 1 thing. Every once in a while it would "ding" and I thought it was the car overheating. A message came up but sometimes it went off too fast to be able to read it. Why does it ding and how can I turn that function off? Don't tell me to look in the book, I read all the materials and it doesn't say how to disable this.
