good portable power source October 8, 2008 I bought this unit to power a 23 watt flourescent light that runs on 110 volts (normal electric). I needed the ability to take this lamp anywhere. After charging for the suggested 40 hours it served its purpose very well. Light enough to carry around and even has a built in l.e.d. which came in handy. I have not used it for anything else yet, so I don't know how good or bad it is for jump starting a car or powering anything else. It does need to be charged regularly or it will lose its charge. Overall i'm satisfied with this unit.
Emergency power when you need it! August 11, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Had been looking for a multifunction portable power supply to replace an early one purchased years ago at Sears. It had worked well, but about 18 months ago refused to hold a charge, and was told by them that I had to replace the unit.
Did some research here and other places on the 'Net, finding that the Black & Decker VEC1026BD Electromate 250 Portable Power Supply and Jump-Starter would probably meet all of my needs, so ordered it here. When it arrived, read the instructions, and found that they stated that the unit had to be charged for 40 hours prior to use. Figured that the engineers who designed it knew more than me, so found a suitable heavy-duty computer-grade power cable and plugged it in as suggested. The specs say "for use with ordinary household extension cord" but is seemed to be a good idea to dedicate a good cord to this unit.
So does it work? Yes, and quite well. It served as a backup power supply for a notebook computer last spring during a local power outage, along with charging my cell phone. It has jumped my car, along with that of a neighbor. Will probably use it during camping this fall as well.
Pros: - 300 amps, enough to jump-start moist cars - Bright LED work/emergency light is built - Reverse hook-up warning alarm when connecting to a car battery - LED battery status indicator - Vehicle alternator voltage check - Easy to handle, basic instructions printed on case - Inverter Input: 12.5V DC, 25 Amps - Inverter Output: 120V AC, 60 Hz, 250 watts - Safety protection for overload, overheating or short circuit - Heavy-duty cables & clamps are supplied - Smaller than most jump-start packs
Cons: - None so far
Note: if you're looking for a model with a radio or air compressor, pick another model. This model is light and compact because it doesn't have those features.
Can already see that this was a good investment, and it's quite reassuring to have it around in case of emergencies. And if you get one, read the manual and follow the manufacturers' suggestion to charge it for the required 40 hours, as it will pay off by extending the life of the unit. Highly recommended, 5-stars!
Does what it is advertised to do. May 13, 2008 I like this because it is smaller than most jump start packs, mainly because it doesn't have an air compressor or a radio. I have successfully jump started two vehicles with it. I use the LED light as a lantern when we go camping. We have run our cell phone chargers off it.

Another piece of junk from Black & Decker. Jump-start your car? I don't think so. Did not even have enough power to light up a 12 volt LED light. Years ago a swore to my self that I would never buy another Black & Decker product because of their poor quality. Took a chance on this and got burned again. Thank you Black & Decker for the aggravation and a waste of my time and money.
Electomate Works April 26, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have to pat myself on the back for getting this. I followed the directions and had to use it sooner than later. Started up my 12 year old GMC pickup like nothing was connected. Easy to operate, It is my new best buddy in my truck.
I got this because my 5 year old "somehow" hit the dome lights only to find my truck dead on Monday morning. I had to back my wife's car out and use the slope of the driveway to jockey the truck out of the garaqe. The Black & Decker VEC1026BD Electromate 250 Portable Power Supply and Jump Starter is a lot easier then that.
