3 out of 5 stars It is alright, but not quite the same..   September 15, 2008

So for fans of the original game, this version has some changes. The board is different of course, but there are a few other rules.

There are only 4 players instead of up to 6.

Each player gets a "leader" piece that can transform and have different special abilities for if it is in vehicle or person form.

There are "moving" locations that provide other special things during the game.

The game takes place over 6 "days" or rounds instead of until the death.

You get to pick your locations at the beginning instead of the randomization of the cards.

There are cards that give you special abilities instead of saving them to trade in for extra armies.

Now, the changes are kind of fun and can be entertaining, but overall, the novelty wears off and leaves wanting to play the original Risk instead. If you are a Risk fan and you can get it for cheap, give it a shot, but if you have never played Risk before, this is just a dumbed down version that is not nearly as fun or exciting, but it can still be somewhat entertaining.

This could be useful for getting some younger kids into the game. They might find it more fun.

To sum up, if it is cheap and you love Risk, go for it, but I would not spend more than 10 bucks max for this.

All I can say is that its unbelievably cool and fun. This was our first time playing Risk (we played over four games back to back) and it was very enjoyable. I'd say it was a combo of Chess and monopoly. Tons of strategy and fun gameplay.

I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't like strategy or who doesn't want to spend hours playing a game.

My children all love to play Risk. We have many versions, and they were excited to get the Transformers edition. Risk involves a lot of strategy. It can take several hours to play, so beware of that. It is not a quick, 10 minute game! Any game like Risk, Chess, Stratego, Rummikub--I think they are great for math skills, for exercising the part of the brain that uses analysis, etc. I'd much prefer this over electronic game playing all day.

5 out of 5 stars Cybertron belongs to me!   June 15, 2007

If you're a fan of RISK and you're interested in a new variation of the game, then this version is for you. Like other themed RISK games there are new aspects to the game, like using leaders with attacking/defending advatages and a time limit to play, but this version also incorporates some unique aspects of the Transformers to make things really interesting. Of course, the Cybertronian leaders of your armies can transform, giving them different abilites depending on their mode, but my favorite thing about this version is that the game board itself changes form. Certain zones move according to your playing of cards, and you can use this to your advantage to reveal hidden areas, create new armies, destroy enemy forces, or block off/open access to other zones. The game play is pretty quick, with only 6 days to conquer Cybertron and needing only one card to play a card (instead of three matching ones in standard RISK), but of course you can vary the rules and play a longer version of the game. My main complaint is that the rules are a little vague in some instances, making battle with and loss of leaders confusing sometimes. The board is unique, but a little bland in that the thick borders of the zones block much of the detail of the well-drawn planet in the background. The armies all use the same figures, with one Decepticon force using an unfortunate purple color. The leaders available for the four different armies are Megatron, Prime, Bumblebee, and Blockade.
