OVERWHELMINGLY POWERFUL / POWERFULLY UNDERWHELMING DESIGN July 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The DYSON slim has AWESOME suction, so it's a true shame that there are so many design flaws that hinder that functionality. The most overrated feature seems to be the ball-it is completely useless when trying to maneuver on rugs or carpet- even low pile! The cord has no place to be but underfoot, as the anchors provide no secure mooring. The weight prohibits use by older or less burly customers and the hose attachments are flimsy and work like low-grade product. Additionally, the 'SLIM' still requires a fair bit of furniture moving; the head isn't low profile enough and the maneuverability isn't great. An upright with this rep should be a prouder product; the eco-friendiness of a bagless system is sublimated by the dust and debris that jump out, when simply removing the lid from the bin. This isn't a vacuum for those w/asthma, back or skeletal issues. The motor would make a honkin' go-cart, I'm sure -Too bad the casing is crappy. Less $$$ on ads may be the key to hopping back to the lab for some more design development. I will stick w/ MIELE until DYSON gets it dialed.
Awesome July 23, 2008 I had heard about the Dyson vacuums and their great reputation. I was truly excited to finally get one. The DC18 is slim and maneuvers in circles and spirals, awesome. I am still not comfortable with how it switches to "stick-mode" automatically because it sometimes does that when I don't mean for it to. Maybe I'll get used to that...
WOW - Why buy anything other than a Dyson? July 20, 2008 Just purchased my Dyson Slim DC18 all I can say is one word WOW. This was to replace my former 12 year old (!) Eureka World Vac Boss (which used bags) which I was very happy with throughout the years. However recently the Boss detached a few times from the base which is not supposed to happen. We kept reattaching it for a while and it still seemed to work. But after a while you decide it has lived its life. Did my research on buying a new vacuum. Considered an Oreck as they are lightweight but said "no" when I found out the attachment tool is a "backpack" separate apparatus (what?) and also they are pricey. Looked at the Halo but read too many contradicting reviews for the ultraviolet light going out on the bottom and hard to replace the light from manufacturer. Decided on the Dyson Slim and boy am I glad I did! This thing is awesome. I figured the Slim model is perfect for my smaller house and more lightweight than the other Dyson models. I did my one area rug 5'X 7' first, and could not believe how much dirt and grime was sucked up by the vacuum (my kids had been laying and playing on that rug prior to me using the Dyson on it - YUCK) so much that my jaw dropped - the carpet looked like I had just shampooed it. Did the rest of my house. The vacuum is AMAZING. Just got it, so I am on a "high" from it right now. Will try to touch base in a few months on if the "high" I am currently receiving from using this remains. However for right now, I am convinced of one thing, I will be recommending this vacuum to everyone I know who will listen to me rave on and on about it.
almost as good as I had hoped July 17, 2008 Works great. The only problem being that it has to be emptied after each use. That was the reason I didn't buy the new Ball. It's easy to manuever,, easy to empty
Great little vac!! July 16, 2008 Wasn't planning on spending this much $ on a vacuum cleaner, but after reading all of the positive reviews, I was sold. This model is slim and perfect for anyone who has tight spaces. I live in a city studio, and this vacuum cleaner is perfect. It fits in tight spaces and the swivel head is ingenious! I was ready to buy a $45 DirtDevil at Target, but remembered my bad experience in the past with cheap vacuum cleaners. After doing a ton of research and faced with an opportunity to purchase this unit at a good deal, I took the plunge. You definitely get what you pay for.
