Product Description
An abusive sexual relationship between a white schoolteacher and a young black janitor complicates the schoolteacher's struggle to come to grips with her sexuality and emotions. Sexual guilt weights heavy on Miss Evelyn Wyckoff. At 35, she is torn between losing her mind or losing her virginity. Anne Heywood stars as Evelyn Wyckoff, a 1950s Kansas high school teacher. Shes a lonely 35-year-old virgin. Donald Pleasence plays her therapist. One day after school, she gets assaulted by a black janitor named Rafe. However, she submits to Rafe's dominance and, in a peculiarly odd twist that is so poorly explained in movies of this generation, Miss Wyckoff appears to enjoy the experience! However, the relationship is flawed from the start. Rafe demonstrates that the quality of a relationship is not improved by being a roguish abuser which he proves to be. Secrets such as this are beyond the collective understanding of 1956 Kansas.Once the students and townspeople find out about it, Miss Wyyckoff becomes the object of their scorn. In retrospect, THE SHAMING is both a brilliant and bothersome period piece unraveling a well-written and sensitive story, but also revealing disturbing aspects of how much has changed in terms of society's overall view of the many themes involved in THE SHAMING dealing with sexuality, race, assault, gender, education and behavior in general.
