True Stories of Life-Saving Pioneers November 10, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This excellent compilation of true stories is taken from the pages of "Wreck & Rescue Journal," the quarterly publication of the United States Life-Saving Service Heritage Association. The motto of the U.S. Life-Saving Service, which was the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard, was "You have to go out, but you don't have to come back." Required by regulations to attempt a rescue, regardless of their chances of returning, the brave crews of the USLSS performed thousands of heroic rescues, using pulling boats, breeches buoys, and guts. This collection includes the stories of shipwrecks and rescues, keepers and lifeboats, Lyle guns and lighthouse keepers-turned-rescuers. This is a must-read for anyone interested in maritime history and the history of the United States Coast Guard. Reviewed by Debbie Allyn Jett November 2007
