Product Description Studies show that the reason why many people gain weight—and keep it on—is emotional eating, not physical eating. Now Dr. Roger Gould, a psychotherapist and a leading authority on emotional eating, shows how to overcome fear, anxiety, and other stresses and stop using food as an over-the-counter tranquilizer that can cause weight gain. With 12 practical ways to stop emotional eating and an eight-session program, Dr. Gould helps you become your own eating therapist and shrink yourself for good.

Life Altering! July 15, 2010 ItsAllMental This book is absolutely mind blowing! Every few pages I would have to just stop reading and take a few moments to collect myself. It was like Dr. Gould wrote the majority of this book with my personal story in mind. "You eat because you're torn between the self you've always been and the self you have an inkling you could become if you'd take a risk." My life in a nutshell. It was revelation after revelation.
Now, I'm a fast reader, but it took me almost 2 weeks to conquer this book, simply because it is so deep. I will be quite honest when I say that it made me quite uncomfortable at times, simply because it was so blunt and so on point. Everything Dr. Gould said makes sense. I can see how I have been using food as a way to sabotage myself and to try and suppress latent emotions. This is a HEAVY book. If you are not ready to clean those proverbial skeletons out of the closet, then you're not ready to read this book. But if you are prepared to take a long, hard, and open-minded look at your past, and silence your inner critic for good, I believe this book can make the difference. Align yourself mentally, and the physical aspect will "fall into place". It's been 6 weeks since I completed the book and I'm more confident and less dependent on food then ever before. This book has been liberating!
Your search is over, this is the book you're looking for July 9, 2010 F. Portell If you've read your share of "diet books" and still haven't found the answer it's because you're looking in the wrong kind of book. This book IS the solution you're looking for. There is not a single recipe mentioned in the book. Instead this book goes to the deep rooted source of the problem and it's my guess that most every other book fails to address this. It's not easy to hear what this guy says but you know he's right.
A good analogy is that of someone who doesn't understand gravity and they lead their lives thinking that heavier things fall faster than lighter things (not true). Then one day someone teaches you about gravity and how it applies equally to all things and your understanding is forever changed. Same is true with this book. When you gain the knowledge and insight from this book you'll never go back to the way you were thinking. You'll understand why shame based, or boot camp type dieting programs fail in the long run because they don't address the root causes Read this book slowly and absorb it all. This book is incredible!

I struggled for years with overweight and emotional eating. This book was my "eye opener" and probably saved my life. Dr. Gould addresses every angle of emotional eating and gets to the heart of the matter so that when you begin to understand the "why" of what you are doing, you are better able to take control of it.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles with food for comfort. It's the best self-help book out there.
He gets it. May 28, 2010 L. Jean 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having struggled with this issue for more than 30 years, it's been incredible to read this book because it in so many ways it feels like he's writing from inside my head....analyzing my feelings and the ways I torment myself. I've no idea how many different books and programs and plans I've tried in an attempt to figure out a solution to this. Short term success occasionally, but always, always in the end whatever it was failed. This works, for me at least. And in reading the book it seems like Dr. Gould's has met a lot of people who are struggling with the very same thing I've struggled with alone and ashamed and feeling like a freak for so long. He gets it. His methods are firmly grounded in years of clinical research....he's not a quack trying to get rich quick on another diet scheme aimed at taking advantage of people who, like me, are desperate to find a way to end the struggle and deal with food like a normal person does. Good luck. I hope this is the answer for you as well.
Tremendously helpful May 19, 2010 L. Bugher (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read the book and am near completion of the online program. I really feel like a big part of me has changed, that the pain has shifted and I don't have the desire to stuff myself anymore. And I've read a lot of books on emotional eating but they just seemed really hokey. I'm not into the spiritual thing, and I'm not really big on meditation or yoga. That seems to be what a lot of emotional eating books and sites suggest. And yeah, I suppose it helps with relaxation and whatnot, but I'm a very practical person. I like to know why things are happening. When I know why, it makes the issue easier to approach. When I'm sitting there, stuffing my face with cakes and hot dogs, knowing full well that I'm not really hungry, it drives me nuts to not know why I keep doing it, why I keep sabotaging my own efforts at losing weight. It's irrational to eat when you're not hungry but I couldn't help myself. Dr. Gould showed me why, and now that I know why and what alterntaives I have, the emotional eating episodes have vanished. And happily, it doesn't involve meditation, yoga, or hugging a tree :) - though those are perfectly acceptable activities if one finds them theraputic. I'm just so happy I found something that focuses on cognition rather than spirituality. It really feels like I've gone through therapy.
Oh, and shameless plug: the online program is 10X more powerful than the book alone. It isn't cheap but there's a reason: it works. Dr. Gould even gives you your money back if you're not satisfied, but I can guarantee 100% that you'll be happy with the results - as long as you're ready for the work. It is a lot of work. But it will open your eyes and show you parts of your psyche you didn't know existed. I know I must sound nuts, but this really changed my life and I want to share it with others who could find it helpful :)
