A great collection of Simpsons Episodes. Nothing beats this! A timeless hit.

I purchased this dvd set as a Christmas present. I know that the recipient has already watched the dvd and he didn't say anything, so I am assuming that it was in wonderfull condition. Thank you very much!

Justin M was dead on. Before fall '96 I was a huge Simpsons fan. I could not miss an episode. The shows from '92 to '96 were the best thing on TV. Then something happened. The shows became, well, less smart. Within less than one year, I had gone from not being able to miss an episode to not being able to watch at all. The shows became painful reminders of what The Simpsons used to be. The movie this summer was the same. A painful reminder. I always wondered if some key writers left after '96. The hilarious timing and brilliant parody simply went away. The funny thing to me is how many people keep watching and don't even notice any difference at all.
 Still going strong, but its obvious that the end is nigh December 30, 2007

To put my views of this season in perspective, here's how I generally categorize the the Simpsons' catalog.
Seasons 1-3, "Early Simpsons": Mildly enjoyable and at times quite witty, but for the most part, completely lacking in any comedic bite. Season 3 shows signs of the greatness that is to come with classics such as "Flaming Moe's" "Lisa's Pony" and ""Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk," but on the whole these seasons fall flat. 3/5 stars.
Seasons 4-7, "Classic Simpsons": This, I take it, is a somewhat liberal categorization of "classic simpsons"--many would not include season 7, but these people, I think, probably just don't realize that this is the season with classics such as "22 short films..", "Grandpa & the Flying Hellfish," "The day the violence died," "Team Homer," "King-Sized Homer," and part 2 of "who shot mr. burns," among others. Anywho, the 100 episodes that constitute these seasons, simply put, are one of the crowning achievements of American pop culture. These are the seasons, that, as New York Times film critic A.O. Scott put it, provide an "inexhaustible repository of humor, invention and insight, an achievement without precedent or peer in the history of broadcast television, perhaps the purest distillation of our glories and failings as a nation ever conceived." 6/5 stars
Seasons 8-10, "Early New Simpsons": Here is where a clear break from the fold can be identified, in my view. There are still a few classics among these seasons, such as "Homer vs. NYC," "Homer vs. the 18th Amendment,"and "Homer's Phobia," but it is obvious that the show is not what it once was. Jokes are more random and "zany," and less character and plot-driven--the plots themselves are less interesting and less absorbing, and here we start to see some of the overt reliance on guest stars that will come to define more recent Simpsons humor. Overall, this is still some of best stuff on television at this point, but it clear the show is on the way down. 3 1/2 (maayybe 4)/5 stars.
seasons 11-onward, "New Simpsons": From this point on, there are no more classic episodes. Sure, you get the occasional episode of season 8/9 caliber, but nothing that could've held its own in seasons 4-7. Episodes range from 1 star to 3 stars.
So, as you can see, season 8 marks the first season in the category "Early New Simpsons." Taken as a whole, I'd say this is definitely the first season that clearly does not stand up to the Simpsons' previous efforts. However, there are still some TRULY classic episodes on these disks--even the ones that aren't so great are still pretty good, and only 1 or 2 episodes ("Lisa's Date with Density," and the Mary Poppins Episode) are "bad". So its not that the classic sense of humor is ENTIRELY absent from this season (as it is by season 11), but just that it is entirely absent in CERTAIN episodes, while still going strong in some others. Overall, I'd say these disks are only for the diehard fan, who simply can't live without those 4 or 5 classics that only season 8 provides. For anything less than a diehard, stick with the classics in seasons 4-7.

I want to start this review by making it clear that i'm a huge simpsons nerd and some of my complaints with this season are very specific and, lets be honest, a little unreasonable. But I'd bet if you're considering paying money to watch a tv show thats on tv for an hour strait 6 days a week, that you might be a pretty big fan too.
Yes, this season contains some heavy hitters like "you only move twice"(hank scorpio etc) and "homer vs the 18th amendment"(the beer baron et all) but there's also some filler episodes like "my sister my sitter" which winds up being mostly depressing and not so much funny. others, like the chili-pepper cook off episode start strong, but fizzle by act three. Season 8 is by no means the beginning of the end, its just hard to follow 4 years of brilliance.
This won't matter to most people, but the commentary on this season is extra-weak. I know its my fault for listening to simpson-commentary, but there are a couple episodes where someone brought their effing kids. they're constantly asking questions like "why does he look like that" and "why did that happen" which, after a moment of awkward silence are answered begrudgingly by groening and others with "um...because its funny." Everyone just seems a little less interested in watching the show and talking about them, and it winds up being contagious.
having made these minor complaints, i should mention how this show in its 8th season is better than 90% of tv shows in their 1st. This is still pretty great stuff, and there's a lot of good writing and nice animation in here. it just seems like they didn't push as hard here.
