1 out of 5 stars BEWARE - SHIPPING DELAY OF 2 TO 3 WEEKS!   November 17, 2008

This is not a review of the Kindle itself since I haven't been able to purchase one yet. I was trying to purchase one for a birthday present, but I've subsequently found out that they are on back order despite the fact that the site didn't tell me that. Needless to say, an estimated delivery date of December 3-5 won't work for a birthday on Nov 20.

This is the second time that Amazon has "hidden" the delayed delivery date until the automated confirmation! I understand the economics of it (if the get you invested in the product you won't purchase something comparable from somewhere else), but I think it's deceptive.

Just wanted to back sure no one else ran into the same situation. Thanks, Oprah for telling everyone about the product... Just beware you're now going to have to wait a while to get it! Sort of forseeable consequence that might merit extra production on Amazon's part! :)

5 out of 5 stars Best thing I ever purchased!   November 17, 2008

The "Kindle" is the best product I have ever purschased in my 56 years! I am an avid reader and the Kindle makes my life so much easier. No more driving to Sam's to get books. No more book clubs to hassle with. Just push a few buttons and "VOILA" you have any book you want at your disposal in seconds.

5 out of 5 stars Amazed...and Hooked on my Kindle   November 17, 2008

I have never used an electronic book before and read hours of reviews before I finally decided to buy it. It's a pricey little gadget and I'm careful with my cash but I don't regret a penny.

I love the feel of paper and I was sure I wouldn't be able to get used to it but within minutes I was unaware that I was reading a screen. I even reached up to "turn" the page a few times! No eyestrain either. The screen is very sharp.

But the biggest selling point is that I no longer have to make a 50 mile round trip to the bookstore. I live in a rural area and even out here I get perfect wireless downloading from Amazon. I can get an entire book delivered to my Kindle in less than a minute! Now *that's* a doggone miracle!

It has a few design issues that hopefully will be corrected in an updated version - the page turning buttons are too large (they take up the entire sides of the device). This makes it difficult to hold and it's easy to turn a page by accident. However, you do get used to it. I also don't like that you cannot tell what page you are on (the page "numbers" are nonsensical). The battery seems to last quite a while - I read 3 books before I recharged. It's lighter than a hardbound and I like the protective cover. It's quite easy to order books - though I find that I browse Amazon on my computer first, then order the tile I want on my Kindle. It's much faster that way and saves the battery.

I'd buy it again in a heartbeat and another may end up in my husband's stocking for Christmas. It's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars If you like to read, you'll love to read on the Kindle   November 17, 2008

My wife is a librarian and had wanted a Kindle ever since she saw one. I looked at the Amazon site and was unimpressed, but bought it for her as her birthday present. After that, I rarely saw her without it. She was always reading it. After several months I took a closer look and asked her how the thing worked. She showed me and ten minutes later I downloaded a book so I could use it. It was incredible. My reading speed increased, I was less distracted, there was never any eyestrain, and I finished a long book [400 pages] in a week. Usually it would take me a month. I thought we could share it. My wife reluctantly agreed, but after two weeks, she informed me it was a "personal reading device" and if I liked it so much I should get my own. After what seems like 87 years of marriage, it was the first **anything** she didn't want to share! I figured that it would pay for itself after 10 books [I used the OPRAHWINFREY discount of $50]. I'm not a gadget freak, and this is no gadget. It is the best electronic device, besides a computer, I have ever used. If you read books you should at least get one in your hands for a few days and check it out. I have yet to fully explore it other than subscribe to the NYT, and I know it has a lot more going for it. My guess is that the vast majority of people who read it for a few hours, will get one asap. It's the best $330 I ever spent. Don't confuse it with an iPhone or computer. It's for print and I won't share mine either. So get your own :)
