Least Obtrusive, Yet Still Offers 100% Protection October 17, 2008 Compared to the competition, namely McAfee & Symantec all-in-one products, Windows Live OneCare still beats them hands down.
WLOC hardly ever intrudes on my daily activities, the only time I ever have to deal with it is if there is a major problem with my system - eg: a virus was detected, an unrecognized program is trying to access the internet, or for some reason the antivirus or firewall is not working. Since I'm a poweruser, OneCare may popup a few times a week requiring me to interact with it - vs McAfee & Symantec's programs popping up a few times a day during my normal usage.
Becides the fact that OneCare does a great job at being an all-in-one security offering, three of its best features and most unique features are: 1. Allowing it to be installed on up to three machines 2. It continually updates the program automatically whenever a new version is released - as long as your subscription is active, it just upgrades to the latest version automatically. 3. It offers a centralized backup, meaning all computers on the same network, using the same OneCare installation can be backed up to one external harddrive - enabling easy management of all backups.
The only major drawback it has are the backup capabilities are not as powerful as they could be. While it does offer the ability to backup files on your system - and even categorizes them into file type eg: Music, Video, Photos, Financial Documents, Office Documents etc, it does not do a full backup of the system. Meaning if your system does crash, you still have to re-install everything from the original disks, and then use onecare to restore your actual data. It would be great if onecare would take an "image" of your system, and then restore that, rather than just backup the individual data files.
Even with that drawback, I'm still very confident that OneCare is working on my computer and protecting me from any and all problems.
Windows Live OneCare 2.0 October 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Works as advertized. Vendor quick to ship. Slight problem ( not issue, hate that word ) with installation on Windows website. Works seamlessly. But the program will not stop reminding me to change a setting after I have made a conscious decision NOT to change a setting.
Not friendly to older programs! October 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I tried OneCare's trial version on a new computer we put into our small business network. I had intermittent problems loading and printing across the network through some of our older DOS programs (yes, we still use several old programs because they work great). The puzzling thing was that I could reboot the computer one time, or nine times before the DOS programs would load and print--it was that unpredictable. I disabled OneCare to see if it was causing the problem. The problems persisted, so I assumed it was caused by something else and bought OneCare through Amazon for all our computers. The same problems then occurred with those computers, so I uninstalled OneCare, which solved all our loading and printing problems. I also found that OneCare slows Netscape to a crawl (yeah, I know--it's a dinosaur, but so am I). Microsoft may treat you OK if you use all the latest apps, but apparently they don't even test this product on older software. I switched to Avast, and life is good.
Best anti virus i ever had October 3, 2008 I have used almost every anti virus program, and i will tell you from my 10 years experiance. that microsoft produc for MS oprating system is best. My system works more faster then even. and the its Firewall, Internet security and virus protection works excelent. On top of it, they let us install same protection upto 3 PC. that cool. Thanks
Set it and forget it. October 3, 2008 It was fairly easy to set up. It does everything I need. It will shut off Windows defender though. You just set it up and forget about it. You have 3 licenses with each product which is great for multiple computer households or if you take care of your mother's or father's computer as well. It runs without slowing the computer. I have a Windows Vista machine with a core 2 duo (8400) 3ghz.
I do wish they had a way to press a button and block the internet connection from all incoming or outgoing connections. I would rather leave my machine on at night but there is no way to shut the connection down without actually disconnecting the internet cable or shutting off the router.
