Excellent Item August 25, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a permanent solution to fix your navigator in your car. This is good till the life of your car. I have tried all different kinds of mounts but it all failed. This one can be fixed temporarily or permanently on your dashboard. Infact purchased a second one for my other car. Great item. Must buy!
Not car surface friendly August 6, 2007 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
Unfortunately this product will not stick on the dashboard of a Mini Cooper for two reasons. 1 ) the dashboard is curved enough that it presents a problem for the flat mounting surface 2) the material surface of the dashboard is faux leather, so the bumps and grooves allow too much air underneath the sticky pad. So I never got it to stick.
I ended up using the glass mount, and this seems to work fine for now
Best thing for a Road Trip July 30, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased my nuvi 660 three days before a road trip "Down East". Fantastic -- never lost once and found each and every B&B on the way. . .You just put it in your rental car and save $200+
My Nuvi 660 Sometimes Loses Its Mind July 27, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We bought both the Garmin Nuvi 660 and an extra automotive mount, to facilitate easy transfer between our two cars. The mount seems to work just fine. But the Nuvi has some odd habits.
Sometimes the Nuvi seems to spontaneously lose track of parts of its map overlays. You'll be driving along with no destination entered in the unit and the local street net displayed... and suddenly the road you know you're driving on, just up and disappears from the screen. Other features of the map are still there (e.g. a nearby major highway, local streams, etc). You have to turn off the unit itself, before it recovers its full knowledge of local civilization features.
We also learned that Americans may not wish to use the British voice programs with the Nuvi. We live close to a US State line. We found out the hard way that the Nuvi looks for addresses organized by the nearest "County" - not by US State - when the British voice is selected. The manual did not make this clear when I read up, trying to figure out what was wrong.
Finally, when we are doing a long trip and have decided to take a different route from the one calculated by the unit, it seems unable to recompute the most efficient route when starting in the direction we've chosen. It keeps on trying to force us to turn around and use the original route. I wish there was a feature for forcing the re-compute to look for alternate routes starting from the line of march just selected.
On the whole we're satisfied with the features of the Nuvi and its mounts. We're just hoping that Garmin gets serious about either bug fixes, or a more intuitive users' guide and display selection menu.
Beware Sticky Situation July 22, 2007 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
I recently purchased three of these stands to place in our three family vehicles. The mount comes with two adhesive strips a permanent strip, and a temporary strip. The temporary adhesive didn't last 24 hours, and I didn't want to commit to mounting the base with a permanent adhesive that may prove difficult to remove, or cause damage to the dashboard. Therefore, I purchased an industrial strength, heavy duty ashesive velcro to apply the mount. The velcro allowed excessive movement in the GPS while entering data, and ultimately didn't hold. I, therefore, purchased double sticky sided duck tape that is rated at holding up to 5 lbs., and that didn't hold. It appears that heat coming through the windshield, and the weight of the nuvi acting on one side of the mount only, proves to be too much of a match for anything less than the permanent adhesive. I live in Virginia and the temperatures here has been 99 plus degrees these past few days, so the temperature inside the vehicle may have reached 120 to 140 degrees. Meeting the environmental demands inside the car is just a lot to ask of a temporary adhesive, so.......unless your ready to commit to a permanent installation of the mount on your car's dashboard this might not be the way to go.
