Much, much better than the windshield suction cup December 7, 2007

I love my Garmin Nuvi. I use it a lot. However, I live in a hot climate and after a year or so the windshield suction cup had "melted" to the hot windowshield enough times through ordinary use that it would no longer create a seal and hold the Nuvi up. After about the tenth time that it fell off, hit my dash, and bounced down to the floor, I decided I needed a replacement. I thought about another suction cup, but I knew the same thing would start to happen and I WAS getting tired of the ring on the windshield when I took the cup off. I put off getting the dashboard friction mount because it looked big. However, it really isn't once it's in place. A bit more of my windshield is visible, something that always bothered my wife when she used the suction cup, and there's no more unsightly ring on the windshield all the time. Does the job, does it well, and when not in use I just toss it in the trunk or on the back floorboard with my collapsible umbrella.

Bulky and heavy, which does the job of keeping the GPS on the dash.
does fit in the glove box of my GTI, so hiding it is not a problem, best not to tell the world there's a GPS in the car.

I've only used the Garmin Portable Friction Mount a couple times, but I like that you can position it where you want it and it doesn't move. Using the suction cup attachment that comes with my Garmin places the unit too far away to easy viewing in some cars and especially a large truck.

I read other reviews before buying and noted that some people had problems keeping this item from sliding around. I've been using it now for several weeks, and it hasn't budged from where I place it on my dashboard. I love that it's not permanently or semi-permanently attached, and that I can move it to the floor so I don't advertise that I have a GPS in the car. I also love that I can move it from car to car, since the reason I bought a portable GPS is that I have several cars I use it in. I can transfer this mount as easily as I transfer the GPS. The only reason I didn't give it a five is that the attachment point is a little loose for my liking, and sometimes the gps unit detaches from the mount when I'm adjusting it up or down.

Nice accessory for my new Nuvi 660. Works perfect on the dash of my Nissan Murano (if you know these cars...there is TONS of room up there for the Nuvi on this mount).
