5 out of 5 stars just the right size   December 1, 2007

We got this pot (in blue) as a wedding gift last year and love it. We use it all the time-- for pasta sauces, soups, etc. Yes, it's on the heavy side but even when it's full of food I can lift it (in contrast, I can barely lift our 7 qt le creuset pot off the stove even when it's empty). If you want a workhorse le creuset pot, one that you'll find yourself reaching for every day, I'd recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Love Le Creuset   November 13, 2007

I love Le Creuset cast iron. I am still using a dutch oven and au gratin pan that I bought in 1968. They do indeed last forever without much babying. Four stars instead of five? Le Creuset never holds as much as advertised. E.g this soup pot says 4 1/4 qt--but I measured with water and got about 12 cups in it. I could squeeze 4 more if I filled it to overflow level at the rim. For practical use, assume they all hold less then advertised. This is a very good buy--I could not find the medium sized soup pot any place but Amazon. The small one(about 2 quarts) is the same price. The bouillabaisse pot is too big for my needs, and considerably more expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Warehouse Deals-what a Deal!   June 21, 2007

Having enjoyed using mine, I purchased this Le Creuset 4-1/4 qt Soup Pot for a gift. The main difference was I purchased this one from Warehouse Deals (the Amazon subsidiary for selling returns, etc) and when it arrived I opened the box with trepidation, expecting to be using the return form within minutes. The Soup Pot was in "pristine" condition and try as I might I could find no defects of any kind, the Le Creuset orange box did have a tear at one corner. The main differences versus Amazon-limited choices, no free shipping, or free product offers, and no shipment tracking number information, but the price was lower, -under one third of list price including the shipping cost of about $10.
So I'd recommend this as an option to save some money on your Le Creuset purchase of single pots. If you want to purchase several the annual Le Creuset outlet sale in early July may be a better option. But if like me you live hours away from a Le Creuset outlet, Amazon or Warehouse Deals is still the best.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Heaven (Cobalt of course)   May 23, 2007

I wanted some "mid range" size enameled cast iron pots that would be a manageable weight and size and be OK when cooking for 2 with left over's, or occasionally 4-6 persons.
The 4 Qt Le Creuset Soup Pot and the 3 Qt Le Creuset Casserole are perfect. I'm planning to purchase a 7 1/4 Qt Le Creuset French Oven in addition. It's a similar weight and diameter to the Casserole, but (unlike the 5 1/2 Qt French oven) is significantly larger than the 4 1/4 Qt Soup Pot, so I feel it is a worthwhile addition for the 20% of things that don't fit the other 2 Pots.
I'm glad I chose the Cobalt Blue, -it adds some color to the kitchen but not too much. It will go well with a bit of red as well.
The things I like about the large flat Casserole pot is that it is 3 Qt, but the lid is 2 Qt so overall it holds 6 Qt, for things like lamb or chicken roasts.
And it's good for everything except soup. The 4 1/4 Soup Pot on the other hand is ideal for soup (no surprise there) since with it's bath tub shape, small soup batches fill up the side walls rapidly. It can be used for everything else as well, but it's not quite so convenient for dishes which are flat by nature like Salmon. The 4 1/4 Qt Soup Pot with lid is about 5 Qt and has almost an inch more headroom inside than the casserole for things like chicken or roasts.
When you receive your order I recommend checking each piece thoroughly inside and out before removing any labels, and then returning any defective ones to Amazon shipping paid, -if you purchase from someone else this may not be free though. I think the Amazon prices are reasonable especially if you don't live near a Le Creuset outlet store, and if you can get close to 50% of list including shipping with an overall purchase of items, I think you are doing OK. Also keep in mind that the 101 year
owner warranty is all very fine, but you have to print the ownership paperwork on archival quality paper to be readable.

5 out of 5 stars le creuset rules   March 26, 2007

We have a couple of le Creuset enameled cast iron items and they are the best we've used for stews and braises - brown meat/etc. on the stovetop and then put the whole dish in the oven. This soup pot is a nice size; the only caveat is that the flat bottom of this one is a little bit small for folks with an electric rangetop (if you plan to brown in it). Great for large casseroles.
