What every guy needs to know... October 30, 2001 103 out of 139 found this review helpful
Always interesting, MAXIM delivers information and humor aimed squarely at the male audience. MAXIM is a hip cross between MAD Magazine (off-the-wall humor), and a censored version of Playboy (lots of bare skin, but no naughty bits showing). The results are always side-splitting, if not informative.Part of the humor comes from how dumbed-down some of the information is, just to make sure men everywhere can understand what the editors are trying to say (and they flat-out tell you, "Hey, we dumbed this down so you'd get the point, stupid!"). Anything real in the way of education or enlightenment comes sprinkled with jokes, and photos of scantily clad beauties to ensure capturing the attention of the male reader. Besides humor, articles talk about exercise, fashion, electronics, cars, and sex. A men's magazine for the over-18 age group, one can expect spicy pictures, a few naughty words, and other adult-slanted humor and commentary throughout. Probably not recommended for the conservative crowd.
This magazine just rocks. October 27, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Have had a subscription for about 2 years now & it always contains many of my favorite things: Beer, Women, Gadgets & Sports. The articles are usually funny and very entertaining. And oddly enough, most women I know also enjoy this magazine (even though it is hailed as a "Men's Magazine"). In college (a few short months ago...) we'd keep a stack of maxims on the coffee table and 9 times out of 10 when girls came over they would pick them up and start reading. The only weak part I see in the magazine are the Book and Music reviews (they are usually WAY off on these...). But the Movies reviews are extremely amusing because they slam all movies equally.
Best men's magazine out there October 27, 2001 Maxim is by far the best men's magazine out there today. Each issue is huge (usually over 250 pages) and is filled with interesting information (not to mention the women). From articles on Sadam's heirs to the Iraqi throne, to how play great practical jokes, this magazine has it all. And the price is right too!
Pure fluff, but not in a bad way... October 26, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Maxim is fluff. I had to get that out of the way first. There is really no purpose other than to entertain... men primarily.
Now then, it is not a bad magazine overall. The photos are pretty cheesy overall, but no more so than the Swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated. The articles are for the most part well written, if not exactly pulitzer prize material. They tend to do a short interview with the cover-girl of the month, and have a few intersting articles if you dig.
Overall, there are much worse ways to spend time than reading Maxim, and it is the perfect size & content for bus/train/airplane rides. If you travel a lot, this might be the perfect magazine for you.
