I find it more readable than National Geographic October 30, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I find this magazine more readable, than National Geographic. This magazine has many researched articles each month. The topics vary wildly from historical sites, historical figures, a particular art genre, popular culture, to the study about a particular animal. Typicaly this magazine features 7 to 8 in dept articles each month, so think of it like the National Public Radio of magazines. The photographs are wonderful and add a great deal to the magazine. Also featured is a page from a leading comic. So this magazine has broad appeal. I would highly recommend this magazine for your reading pleasure.
Hands down, the best general interest magazine in the USA August 23, 2002 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I read a lot of magazines on a regular basis and very few match the editorial standard this one sets. Thanks to the very nature of the immense collections of the various Smithsonian museums, this magazine has a virtually unlimited breadth of coverage--from aerospace to zydeco. They make it all interesting, and, while the art direction hasn't kept pace with the magazine field in general in recent years, it's still a superb publication and an absolute STEAL at ($$$) a year! Highly recommended as a gift, too.
Beautiful December 5, 2001 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This magazine is beautifully done. The subject matter is varied and is always interestingly written. You don't need to be a historian to find this magazine captivating. The photographs are beautiful, the writing is first rate and the subjects are fascinating.
Better than a trip to the museum! October 26, 2001 43 out of 43 found this review helpful
I never know what I'm going to find when I open an issue of Smithsonian, but I always find something intriguing that I would never have learned about in any other way. The depth and breadth of the articles never ceases to astonish me. In what other single magazine could you read about the art of Maxfield Parrish, the history of the calendar, the 13 smallest countries in the world, and see photos of exotic species of chickens? The writing is always intelligent, often witty, and inevitably a pleasure.
