Be Surprised If This Lasts a Season Unless It Perks Up September 29, 2007 1 out of 30 found this review helpful
There's some pretty good actors in this pilot, but they aren't given much to work with in the writing. A friend of my has a theory that they shot a lot of scenes then tried to make a story out of it. Anyway, it's pretty much the same vampire lore with a couple of not really new tweaks. For instance he can go out in the daylight, garlic and religious symbols don't bother him.
There is also a clutch of vampires who are trying to protect themselves from being discovered. I was getting flashbacks to Forever Knight, Kindred the Embraced, and Angel and it's not as good as any of those.
It might be fun if they downplayed the PI, gave more airtime to his snarky vampire friend and ditched the blonde (Sophia Myles).
Blood Ties based on Tanya Huff's The Blood Books, Vol. 1 (Blood Price / Blood Trail) is better and I'm looking forward to the series based on Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series Definitely Dead (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 6).
These Vampires DON'T Suck! September 29, 2007 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
OK, so the title of this review is cheesy, but the show is not. I'm not normally a sci-fi/fantasy fan, but this show doesn't go in that direction. It's a great modern take on an old theme. Highly entertaining television. Hooray for talent! The actors hold your attention and the writing is beautifully carried out with perfect timing. It has a rapier wit that almost catches you by surprise. Great viewing for a Friday night.
Enjoy!
