5 out of 5 stars Simple to use   February 11, 2007

Bought this like other reviewers in order to simply find out what kind of problem is causing the check engine light to come on. Depending on what's read I can then decide how important it is for me to either delay or immediately get the problem fixed. Device works very well and its easy to use. Instructions are fine and once you read the codes and write them down, you can erase the code to shut off the check engine light. And the price is certainly reasonable.
The weakness in this product and similar devices may be in finding out what the codes mean. In my case have a German car (BMW)and also have the shop manual for it. So codes the device displays can be found in my shop manaul but I may not find them in the software list that comes with the device. Suspect that domestic car codes would be covered more completed but don't know for sure. In any case if you want to fix the car yourself would strongly recommend a shop manual which lists all the OBD codes for your specific car.

This scanner told me why the check engine light was on, and turns if off. If the problem is fixed, the light will not come back on. Pays for itself on first use.

5 out of 5 stars Good product, great service   January 22, 2007

I needed this to figure out if I really needed service or if the trouble light was for something I could fix. The Actron unit worked perfect and Amazon's delivery was sooner than expected. If you don't need the advanced features of the more expensive units this is a great choice.

If you want to know what the codes are, and reset them if you want, this is the tool for the job at the best price available right now. Perfect for the DIY guy who is on a budget and doesnt need the bells and whistles a professional might.

4 out of 5 stars PocketScan is easy to use   January 12, 2007

I was very impressed with the ease of use of this Pocketscan CP9125. You simply plug it in, press a button, and wait 30-60 seconds for any codes to show up. It couldn't be simpler.
Determining what the code actually means from the cross reference book is a little more difficult. In my case it showed a 'small leak in evaporative control system'. This wasn't a tremendous help, but with some further searching, I quickly began to suspect the gasket on the Gas Cap. I replaced the gasket and used the scanner to quickly reset 'clear' the code. Clearing the code was again as easy as pressing a couple of buttons.
I am happy to say that my code has not reappeared.
This unit paid for itself with one use and I am waiting for another chance to use it. Know anyone with their check engine light on?
