OBDII Code Readers January 9, 2007 The Actron CP9125 is a good basic code reader. It performs well and is easy to use. The reader will identify basic trouble codes and allows one to reset the "check engine" light. My experience using the reader with a 2000 Volvo identified some but not all of the problems causing the "check engine" warning light. After repairing the items identified, an additional problem had to be identified by a Volvo dealer with a more sophisticated code reader.
Pays for itself the 1st time you see the January 9, 2007 Information will set you free. Or at least it will save you big bucks the next time you see the dreaded "check engine" light. For most people, seeing that light means assuming that another several hundred dollars will be coming out of your wallet.
Never again be forced to take it on faith that your dealer or mechanic is giving you the straight story as to why that light went off. You'll also never again be extorted when it comes to extinguishing it either. I came home and purchased this device the very same day.
This nifty little gadget will give you the codes for everything your car thinks is wrong with itself. Descriptions of the codes you get are easily available on the Internet. From there, you either have enough information to fix the problem yourself, or at the very least, enough information to know if your mechanic is giving you a story. Even crooked mechanics will be less likely to mess with you if they think you have any clue as to what the problem might be. Information is power. Never again go to a mechanic ill-informed as to why that light is on. I believe that everybody who owns a 1996 or later car should have one of these.
cp9125 Actron January 9, 2007 This little gadget is great for even those of us who are not auto-mechanics. I am a shade tree mechanic and was tired of having the little red icon checked by the shop even though they did not charge. My son in law is charged $35.00 just to have the shop "Star Wars" thing hooked up. Bought one for him to see how well it worked. I then went and got one for me!
With the code manual that is included I can find out the basic meanings of the code and usually tell if the engine is going to self destruct before I get to the 7-11 or not.
It also gives you a little heads up before going to the shop!
Un-plugging the 9125 is a little difficult but is a very minor thing.

Hardware good but documentation poor January 9, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Actron CP9125 is a low end Code Reader for OBDII vehicles, but it does a fine job at reading the codes and I certainly recommend its use. However, once you have the error code in hand, the little booklet that translates the code(s) you have just found could do a lot better. For example, I discovered that my vehicle, a 2001 Hyundai Accent, displayed code P0133. The little booklet that comes with the CP9125 told me that P0133 indicated "O2 Sensor CKT Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)". It should have been more explicit, writing out in plain English the meaning of "CKT" which I am guessing means 'circuit', and that Sensor 1 is the 1st Oxygen (O2) sensor in the exhaust system leading away from the engine. But, the bigger problem is that the documentation should go into much more detail. In my case I thought my problem would be solved by replacing the O2 sensor. So I replaced it, destroying the original in the process. (O2 sensors can be very difficult to remove and most small garages simply break off the top so they can use a socket and breaker bar over the base.) As it turns out, the P0133 code can be triggered by a leak in the exhaust system between the 1st and 2nd O2 sensor - in my case at the exhaust flexible coupling, an easily fixed problem. In fact, this is a very frequent problem when you have a P0133 code. Unfortunately, O2 sensors start around $70 and can go well over $100, and this does not count the labor to remove and replace. Money I lost simply because a quick list of things that could trigger a P0133 code was not included in the documentation. I am sure this is true for all the other codes. I know this would make the little booklet of documentation much larger, but without this information the Actron CP9125 can end up costing you much more than its initial cost.
very useful tool to have January 4, 2007 I bought this because my Ford F-150 had the check engine light on. It read the code and I cleared it. A shop would charge almost $40 for this. Most codes are not so critical. This is a great tool to have if your vehicle keeps giving the same stupid code. Just one week later, my wife's car did the same thing and I was able to clear her code too. Again it was something that did not require immediate attention. The device is easy to use and cheaper than you would pay at a parts store. Overall a very nice device to have.
