Absolute waste of $60 March 20, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Black and Decker "Simple" Start is the most expensive paperweight on the face of planet earth. It should be PERMANENTLY RECALLED by Black and Decker NOW.
THE PROBLEM: It DOES NOT CHARGE, either from the cigarette lighter of a charged car, NOR from the provided 120V wall plug. Instead, it simply beeps at you, like a very nervous dying cricket.
Note that you can tell power IS going into the BD-SS (or BS for short) since the LED lamp does light up if triggered while "charging". But no juice ever goes to the unit's batteries.
It should come charged anyway, so that you could take it out of the box and put it immediately to good use on your vehicle's dead battery. It does not.
Don't get this March 19, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I should have trusted the bad reviews on this one. This didn't work. I tested it by draining my battery(left light on), and it failed to recharge the battery at all. I would have been upset if this happened for real. It just chirped and stopped. When I try to recharge the charger, it seems to never completely charge. After it chirps to let me know it is done, I can start it charging again and after awhile it chirps again, but I can get it charging again forever. The light on the charger does seem to work ok,and I was able to charge my cell phone using the charger. One reviewer said he kept returning the unit because it was defective. Maybe I got a defective unit, but it is almost completely useless. I needed a car battery charger not a cell phone charger. There are some great reviews for this and some bad reviews . Why does a company like black n decker not test their products better before selling them?
Did NOT work for me March 18, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have tried four units now and I have not been able to make any of them work. The first unit refused to charge when plugged into an AC outlet. This problem seems to be known to B&D. Subsequent units did charge, but exhibited constant beeping when I tried to boost the car battery. I don't know if it is the unit, the car or me, but I just can't get it to work. Seems like a good idea for a product, but something is not clicking here.
Great for safety and anyone can use! March 12, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have had this for about 4 months. I got it when my battery started acting funny. It got my car going when it had been completely dead one morning (6am on a winter morning trying to go to work is not the time to have your car not work.) It has done it's job for me and I have no complaints.
I paid about $40 for this. It fits in the glove compartment. It's easy to use, I just put my keys in the ignition on accessory and plug this in and give it some time to charge my car(about 10 minutes.) The downside to this is when you are charging the booster in your home it will take about 8 hours to fully charge. I think it's a small price to pay to have insurance when your car won't start or the battery dies while operating. Unfortunately, both have happened to me and this booster has come in handy.
bad - out of the box March 10, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The unit failed to accept a charge either from the 115VAC adapter or from the auto cigarette lighter. I don't need the drama of sending it back for a replacement. I'm glad it was only $38.00.
