Better than the larger model May 27, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Last year I purchased two of the larger two bulb models and ran them continuously day and night in my back yard for about 4 months. The only time they were turned off was when I had to clean the accumulation of dead bugs from the electrical grid that zaps the bugs. Both units failed. On one the zapper mechanism quit as well as the ballast for the flouresent UV lights and on the other the ballast failed. How do I know? Well I bought replacement bulbs for both thinking it was the bulbs went bad.
These single bulb units I bought for this year were each about 40% of the delivered cost of a two bulb unit and seem to fill up with bugs just as fast. They work well for as long as they work and at the price you pay for the single bulb unit, they are a good buy even if they last for only a single season.
Besides, after a while the dead bug residue makes them filthy to handle and both of mine had red wasps build nests in the upper chamber; the holes to the upper cahmber need to be plugged to prevent this.

The flowtron Insect killer is extremely well designed and fabricated. It is far superior in operation than its competitor's model. I would highly recommend this device.

This bug wacker is doing the job. It was bought at a very reasonable cost.
Works Well, But Starter is Hard to Replace May 11, 2008 The unit works well at attracting and zapping bugs. But about a year after I bought it, the lamp stopped working. I replaced the bulb but that didn't fix the problem. As it was under warranty, I contacted Flowtron and they thought it was the starter, and since I told them I was technically knowledgeable, they sent me a replacement.
To replace the starter I had to remove the cover, remove the transformer, clip the 2 leads from the old one, and solder the new one in place. The manual actually says that the unit must be returned to have the starter replaced and I can see why. I don't mind having to replace a part once in a while, but if the starter is a part that wears out regularly, it should be designed to be replaced easily by the user. Having to return it to Flowtron or use a soldering iron is unacceptable.
Flies seem to ignore it May 8, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The box says it works for flies, but in our yard flies seem to complete ignore it. It kills moths (hmm, moths are attracted to light, who knew?) But our issue is backyard flies (both tiny ones and middle-size) from god-knows-where and they seem to ignore this device, day or night.
