Tremendous value November 29, 2007 A good 2-gallon dutch oven is a wonderfully versatile instrument, even if, like me, you never take one anywhere near a campfire. I use mine primarily for making cassoulet, a kind of all-day meat and bean stew, working on the stovetop or in the oven as need be. It is also, as the largest pot I own, happy to make stocks or do anything else I ask of it.
This oven is a standout for value. One of the reasons for that is that it is shipped "unseasoned" and you will need to season it before cooking with it. This is no big thing: you coat with grease or shortening and bake it in the oven for a while. It's really not much harder than the cleaning process you should use every time you're done cooking. (Cleaning is the one thing you really have to keep on top of--cast iron will rust if you let it stay wet and exposed. Scrub it out quickly, heat it in the oven to dry it completely, then rub some oil into it and store it somewhere fairly dry.)
I couldn't tell you about the funny little fryer basket that came with it--promptly lost mine and forgot it even came with one until I wandered back to this page to write my review. But the oven itself, I am just in love with. A great purchase!
Great product October 11, 2007 I purchased this as a gift. The recipient hasn't used it ye. but exclaimed "Awesome!", when he saw it.
my mistake October 9, 2007 this oven was tough to season and extemely heavy. had i known the weight would bend the oven rack would have gone smaller. having said that it performs first rate for baking and stewing.
great for the price! September 11, 2007 the casting surface was a little rough, and the lid did not fit tight, but all in all this dutch oven is a great value. the matching fryer basket is a nice accessory, as i frequently make up a mess of beer battered fish.
Very Good Quality.... Easy to season July 12, 2007 Greetings, This Cast-Iron Dutch Oven is of very good quality for the price... An avid cast iron dutch oven user checked it out when I received it... I followed the seasoning directions... EZ... Took it out camping and cooked over an open fire, the seasoning job worked... Nothing stuck to the bottom... I have alot of expermenting to do... I'm sure it will be a great fun adventure...
