3 out of 5 stars Beware if you have existing Boot Camp installation!   December 3, 2007

I have an existing Boot Camp installation and installed the VM Ware Fusion product to get around having to re-boot everytime I wanted to use the single Windows app I need to access.

The VM Ware product created a new 'virtual machine' which to the existing MS install is a 'new hardware' configuration so I had to 'activate' Vista again - this came to light after Vista 'locked' the OS which meant I had to call in to activate the product. It took me several hours of phone calls to MS as well as having to re-install the VM Ware product to get this resolved.

Long story short, the VM Ware product did not play nice at all with the existing Boot Camp install of MS Vista and their Tech Support was very slow (each response took over a day). They were not much help.

I do not recommend this product if you have an existing Boot Camp install. It may be fine if you're installing a brand new copy of Windows - you won't be tortured by the MS activatio process.

It seems that they could engineer their software to work around this - or even document this somehow - but that is not the case. I searched their documentation and the company's website and found no information or instructions on how to deal with this situation.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Solid, Very Compatible   November 25, 2007

After using Parallels for a year on my MacBook Pro, I decided to try VMware about a month ago. I didn't realize how much I was missing.

First, I've always struggled getting the latest Ubuntu releases to work on Parallels. For example I have to manually turn on networking every boot. After installing Ubuntu on VMware it just works.

Second, and even more importantly I run Windows XP primarily for use with my Garmin 60cx gps unit. On vacation in Europe last summer it drove me crazy that Parallels would just die, I had to carefully choose the smallest set of maps to download or the map transfer would seem to work but when I tried to set up a route on the 60cx I would get errors. After installing VMware I used the handy VMware Importer to transfer my windows image. As a test I tried to download the maps for all of North America. It worked flawlessly the first try. Not only that but I can create routes to even the most remote locations without error.

Finally, I really appreciate that the guest operating systems seem more snappy under VMware, while at the same time it is more friendly with my mac applications. I don't feel like my machine is bogged down when I leave a virtual machine running in the background.

I mentioned the VMware importer, which is great, the only problem I had when I imported my windows image was that I had turned on desktop sharing in parallels. When I first booted under vmware I could not get to My Documents and I could not install the VMware tools. A couple of quick edits to the registry fixed that problem and everything works just fine.

4 out of 5 stars VMWare shows its professionalism   November 25, 2007

VMWare is widely used by business and it shows in the well thought-out fusion product. It just works. The interface is intuitive and the ability to attach/detach drives, printers, USB devices is nice. Works just like a standalone PC. I can't compare it to Parallels since I have not used it, but I went with this because of VMWare's strong commercial track record and I am not disappointed. Businesses require reliability and the products must work well and VMWare appears to keep improving their product to keep up with changes in the workplace. As a home user in this instance, I appreciate getting a professionally proven product.

5 out of 5 stars Very each to install   November 22, 2007

It is excellent product. You can do almost everything in windows, except games that uses 3D graphic.
By the way, if you are really into games, then you should not get Mac anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Fusion Works fine! M$ not so good!   November 22, 2007

I installed Fusion on my MacBook Pro. I have 2gb of ram and it ran very nicely. The toughest part is the WinXPPro copy I bought on ebay that is OEM. My attempt to update the system software brought a message from M$oft that I had an invalid serial number and I could could upgrade for $149. I had already spent $135 on ebay for the OEM system software and opted to scrap the project. I don't need Windoze that bad. How does Apple manage to sell a totally usable superior operating system for $129, no questions asked. Sounds like greed to me.

I decided to buy Fusion because of the rebate and the special price Amazon offered back in October that made the final price attractive. It worked very seamlessly during installation and ran the system fine for the short time I used it. I am currently awaiting my rebate which will help cut my losses.
