Gets the job done so far........ November 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As soon as I got this drive, I reformatted to NTFS (to allow files larger than 4gb as other reviews have mentioned). **Use the Quick format function or it will take forever**
After formating was done (about 1 minute) I transfered 100 GB (ya, giga with a G) to the hard drive from my computer. This transfer took a little more than an hour and a half, but went through flawlessly without crashing or stalling.
1 TB of space is a lot. To fill this up you have to have a lot of video or tons of files. The drive itself looks good. It is heavier than it looks, but it stands well vertically. It does not get too hot (just make sure you do not cover the air vents on the top, back or bottom -- make sure you place it on a hard surface so it can get air through the bottom part).
CONS: Not a terribly big deal for me, but I should mention that the cords that come with the drive are short. The power cord is short (about 5 or 6 feet) and the USB cable is only about 3 or 4 feet). This can be a problem if using a laptop or desk set-up that requires longer cords. But you can just get extension cords if it comes down to that.
Big, fast and efficient November 9, 2008 Western Digital's 1 TB external drive is as good as their claims and maybe even better. The unit is easy to set up; runs quietly; does the job of protecting data.
This external hard drive is a solid purchase and leaves the buyer with NO regrets.
Great drive November 6, 2008 I bought 2 of these and they work just fine. XP professional recognized them immediatly and "new hardware" was ready in a few seconds. A note to those of you wanting to use them for hi def movie storage. They come formatted with FAT32. You need reformat them with NTSF. FAT32 has a maximum file size of 4 gig and all hi def movies are larger than that. You will get a disk full error message even when the drive has plenty of space.
Good product. November 2, 2008 I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend it was on his wishlist and with little knowledge of what it was dished out the money. All you had to do was plug it in and it installs everything on it's own. Very small, sleek, light design that sits well on his desk. He has not had any problems with the hard drive. It is fast and reliable. When this one is full he said he would definitely buy another. Other than it being a bit pricey if you can catch it on sale it seems to be worth the money.
Works Great November 2, 2008 Pretty much plug and play. Useable right out of the box, Easy to format and rename to whatever you want to name it. I recomend installing the Western Digital drive diagnostics and tools, they help with partitioning the drive and have other nice applications later on down the road. Copy the WD files to a folder on your pc to save them,( or you can download them from WD later ) then format the drive so you have maximized your space on it, and there you have it. I use them for storing my downloaded movies and such. This is my third WD 1TB drive and all are working well a year later.
