5 out of 5 stars Best modern day western   August 18, 2006

This is an excellent film. An all time favorite and classic. The scenes are beautiful, acting is great, makes you want the story to be true.

4 out of 5 stars It kind of grabs you.....   May 17, 2006

I found this movie the way I found the original Highlander video -- bottom shelf at Blockbuster, no one there knew about it. Watched it, liked it,returned it. I found myself renting it repeatedly, because it felt good to watch it. Ultimately, that's why you should watch it, too -- to feel good. Every element of the movie combines to generate this effect (well, you might have to work a bit to appreciate the voice over). Nonetheless, this one's a winner.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating premise and a well told story   May 3, 2006

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It is fascinating to imagine a lost tribe of Indians living in an isolated wilderness, and having had no contact with White society since the 19th century. The story is well told, and the chemistry between Tom Berenger and Barbara Hershey is good. It's also intereting to imagine oneself in the shoes of Berenger's or Hershey's character, knowing that if the existence of this lost tribe were to be revealed to the world at large, it would mean the end of their way of life. The only two big plot holes that hurt the story is, first, that with our knowledge of genetics, we know that a tiny, isolated population comprises too limited a gene pool to sustain a viable population in the long run, and will eventually suffer the effects of inbreeding if they don't get an infusion of genetic material from outside (i.e. the lost tribe will be doomed anyway, and will ultimately degenerate and die out like the Norse colony in Greenland did). And the second (spoiler warning) is that when Barbara Hershey's character chooses to remain with the Cheyenne, she's leaving behind a life in the civilized world, friends and family who will miss her, and students who knew that she went off alone into the wilderness with Tom Berenger's bounty hunter, and that she was at least slightly suspicious of him when she set out. When he comes back and she doesn't, it is almost certain that people would suspect foul play, and mount a search for her, and that could lead them to the lost tribe of Cheyenne. If she really wanted to protect them from discovery, she'd need to leave them and return to her own society.

5 out of 5 stars What a movie should be - fulfilling, beautiful, engrossing   April 6, 2006

I can't believe I haven't written this review ages ago! I have owned LOTD since it was released on DVD and have watched it innumerable times, either alone or to watch my friends enjoy it. I agree about the unnecessary voice-over; I surely don't need anyone telling me what is going on!!

The several stories lines woven seemlessly throughout the movie are each interesting and gripping and the romance arc is truly believable. Of course, Tom Berenger carries this production to perfection as usual and the rest of the cast is really excellent. My favorite scenes are "Don't let anyone eat my dog" and that second kiss when Lewis leaves to deter the Sheriff.

I fully recommend the extras, very well done and they add to the enjoyment of the show. I am so happy Amazon is featuring this great movie again and I know many more viewers will have a super enjoyable and moving experience viewing a beautiful tale of adventure, romance, and mystery.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Ever.   March 20, 2006

I avoided watching this movie several times, not knowing it would soon become my all time favorite. It was spell binding the first time and every time since. I feel that Barbara Hershey, Tom Berenger and Steve Reevis haven't been given the credit they each deserve; this movie shows everyone what I have known all along. A movie combining fantasy, western culture, history and modern means will always remain #1 with me. After all, it is a movie and movies are entertainment.
