4 out of 5 stars They're Irhabists, NOT Jihadists.   August 30, 2006
9 out of 17 found this review helpful

This video (which deserves to be re-released on DVD) is a great exposé of the irhabiyeen musharikeen, or "terrorist infidels" who seek to unite the Islamic world under a new Caliphate, destroy Israel and fatally undermine the West as so conquer the world for the Islamic Ummah. There is a lot of amazing footage here that was taken throughout the 90's, of irhabists speaking - often openly in public - of their plans. Chilling stuff. It is too bad that few paid attention to this before 9/11.

This is an important video, in other words. My only reservation is that the wrong lessons might be taken away from it, especially in light of what has happened since it was produced.

We ignored them before, but now we may be letting the extremists dominate and color our thinking too much.

The temptation upon seeing something like this is to over generalize. It's cliché, but I can tell you from my experience living, working and studying in the Muslim world, that the vast majority of Muslims- like my Turkish sister in law & her extended family for example - are not extremists. Nowhere even close to the fringe, in fact. Of the few percent of the billion Muslims in the world that would call themselves Salafis, and the similarly small percentage of radical Shiites, only a few would actually seek to attack the U.S.. Admittedly, that's still a sizeable number of people. Hundreds of thousands, a few million, maybe. The point is, though, that 990+ million of that billion are too busy with their lives- working, praying, studying, buying, selling, sleeping, eating, drinking, getting high, making babies, being with friends and family, ignoring their religion; you know, the things that normal people do - to bother with attacking the Great Satan.

Our goal should be to increase that quotient of normality exponentially.

So, we must be smarter than the irhabists, and treat the normal Muslims with respect. Not as members of some insane cult, guilty by association. Because this is truly a war for hearts and minds. The first battle is for our own. Become wise as a serpent, innocent as a dove. The recognition that all Muslims are not the same is a first, critical step. The route to peace lies through their differences. We need to make and cultivate Muslim friends. We need to respect them, and that alone will win half the battle. Let's talk, and learn, and teach. And maybe really try to preach the Gospel?

Ask hard questions: What about the many "paradoxes" (apparent contradictions?) in al-Quran al-Kareem? Did you know Islam has many resonances with Arianism and Gnosticism? What about the many odd parallels between Islam and Mormonism? Did you know that the entire African, Levantine and Anatolian shore of the Mediterranean was a part of the Christian Roman Empire before the Muslim conquest? And so forth.

In my experience, most Muslims love to talk about God, even about Christianity. So let's talk. Divide and conquer with love, as they say.

Because the "irhabists" are exactly that: terrorists and extremists. They are the Branch Davidians and Militia Movement of the Islamic world. They have only gained the traction they have because of the common Muslim perception of widespread Western and Israeli injustice and decadence. Normal Muslims, though, are just that: normal. You can talk to them, and we should. Let's not let inflammatory rhetoric by the madmen on the fringe drive us to legitimate their violence through our over- reaction.

We need to be canny if we're going to stop the madmen, and reframing the debate is everything. It starts with choice of words. We should stop calling them "jihadists," as if they represent a rightful movement within Islam. They're freaking terrorists for Pete's sake: irhabists or irhabis, or else irhabiyun (nominative) or irhabiyeen (objective); not jihadists (those who strive for Islam, or holy warriors.) This is a truly crucial frame shift. When we call them jihadists we implicitly legitimate them in Islamic terms. We imply that they are out of the heart of the Islamic tradition, and thus validate their violence. This is stupid. I really wish someone with influence like Bush would start making this distinction, using the Arabic terms.

Treat the contemptible with contempt. Everyone else we should embrace with deference, as friends.

One of the reasons that we have had hardly any terrorist incidents in the U.S. since 9/11, as opposed to the many major events in Europe, is because we treat the millions of Muslims who live here with a lot of dignity. They are fully American. They have the same rights & possibilities as any American, and they know it. That's not usually the case in Europe. And that Muslim alienation, coupled with demographic trends that will likely lead to Muslim majorities there in the next few decades, is liable to bring sharp conflict. But it doesn't have to be.

Let's try respect, integration and conversation, before violence. See if it works.

Anyway, in sum, watch this video, it is important to know our enemy. But as I say, we really need to take care not to over generalize. We need to complicate our minds. Read some Sufi poetry (al- Rumi is very good) or talk to an actual Muslim after you watch this. We need to be reminded that not all Muslims are like the poseurs in this film.

Not even close. Thank God.

5 out of 5 stars NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!   September 1, 2005

Rhetoric that will shake your very soul spoken by some of the most impassioned Jihadist's living in our largest and most beloved cities. Wake up America and flee all you politically correct liberals to save yourselves. But why, oh why is this book and video on the closeout list when it should be on the front of Time, Newsweek, and every newspaper in the US?

5 out of 5 stars Information for Non-readers   August 5, 2005
For the past four years, since 9/11, I've been on a personal quest to figure out why the terrorists thought it in their best interest to murder almost 3,000 Americans. I've read perhaps 30 books on the Middle East, Terrorism, Islam, the clash of civilizations and related topics. I am far and away the best informed person on Islam and terrorism I personally know. I have a definite opinion on the subject, but almost no one wants to hear about any of it, neither the subject nor my opinion. It's either so alarming they don't want to hear about it, or such old news they're not interested.

I even bought copies of some of the better books and passed them out to my friends to read so we could discuss them. Of the 15 books I passed out, one person read one of the books.

The typical attitude is it didn't happen to me. It didn't happen in the past day. It didn't happen here. I'm bored with the subject. Let's talk about the latest Oprah Winfrey show.

But this video is only an hour long. Perhaps my friends and acquaintences will have an attention span long enough to watch the video. It's alarming. It's simplistic. It doesn't really get into the crux of the problem. But it is short and easily understood.

The problem: For the past 1,400 years there has been a clash between Islam and the West that has been recently exacerbated by the shrinking of our world. Moslems claim Islam is the true religion, but the Islamic world is thrid rate. The GDP of all Islamic countries, including their oil revenue, is less than half that of Italy. (Half a trillion dollars for the Moslems, 1.2 trillion for Italy. 12 trillion for the U.S.)Moslem poverty fuels Moslem rage. But Moslem poverty is not the fault of the West. Their poverty is the result of the laws, restrictions and customs of their society, and those laws, customs and restrictions basicaly come from the Qur'an. To solve their problem they've got to reintrepret their religion. But they don't want to. They'd rather lash out in anger.

This video won't tell you the details of the problem, but it will tell you there is a problem, and it's getting worse.

Best single book to read on the subject: "Unveiling Islam", by Ergun and Emir Caner. They articulate the problem and offer a solution.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Un-PC Truth   November 27, 2003

Steven Emerson presents a well researched and documented problem in the United States. Ironically, what he found in his investigation during the early 1990s is still true today. Ignore the anti-Emerson reviews and watch the tape. Are all Moslems involved in terrorism? No. Do we have a problem with terrorist Moslems in the United States hiding behind the American right of freedom of religion? Definitely. The attacks on Emerson from the Moslem PR machine is typical and expected. Those of us "in the business" know Emerson is correct and also know there is a serious problem within the American Moslem community. Unless the Moslem community takes action against the radical elements, the terrorists will continue to survive. Ignore the polictically correct drivel and watch the tape. Decide for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of what was going on a decade ago   November 14, 2003

This video was made popular after the 9/11 attacks. That was way too late. If people would have been shown this video at the local town halls, churches, and schools, alot of what happened could have been prevented. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

If I could say anything about the video, it would be that it was a definate 'eye opener' for my family. They had no clue that these 'peaceful muslims' had any intentions of attacking innocent people. Well, it's time to wake up. The world isn't that way anymore, and it's about time that Islam is exposed for what it really is: A CULT!
