A classic November 4, 2008 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
This classic, beautiful tale about following one's quest and the power of the "Personal Legend", as the author calls it, was an easy and enjoyable read. I found the story of Santiago's (the main character's) spiritual travels through Spain very inspiring. It reconnected me with the magic and adventure of going for my dreams. Coelho's wise and direct words, reminded me of the book Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenmentby Ariel and Shya Kane. I came across them in my own search and their books have touched my heart deeply and have also been catalysts for a profound shift in the way I experience life these days: easy, enjoyable and full of miracles! I recommend no matter at which point in life you are at, to check out Coehlo's and the Kane's books which are great tools for well-being and modern day enlightenment. Share them with your friends and family!!

Skip it.
Unless you want your characters to be caricatures, your literary techniques abused, and your symbolism heavy-handed. In which case, you should probably read it.
Are You Kidding Me? November 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Twenty Million copies sold worldwide? Laughable. This book is nothing more than ridiculous platitudes and cliches about having the courage to go for you dreams, and it's boring to boot. Go out and make your dreams come true; you don't need to waste one second of your life on this book as it won't help you in the least.

Charming Fable and Adventure October 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In a way this book mirrors Paulo Coelho's own life. Early in his life he left a career as a lawyer in Brazil to travel throughout South America, North Africa and Europe and explore mystical and spiritual philosophies as well as the different countries. The hero in this book is a poor boy living in Andalusia who has a dream that tells him to go to the Egyptian pyramids where he will find treasure. A gypsy interprets his dream and encourages him to go the pyramids. A man calling himself the King of Salem presents him with the Urim and Thummin stones to be used for divination. Thus the adventure begins, one that leads him to North Africa where he confronts perils in the desert and finds true love on an oasis. His journey pits him against both physical and spiritual challenges that change and enlarge his world view. The story has the charm, magic and spirit of adventure of many classic stories and well deserves it place as one of the best selling books of all time.
