Breaking Dawn August 3, 2008 21 out of 31 found this review helpful
I was in love with the first three books and counted down until I could read the book, I hated the book and at times had to put it down and just stop reading it because of my dislike for it. I was seriously excepting a lot more and am truly really really sad over the ending of this. Like many people have said it sounded more like a fan fiction book than one actually written by Stephanie Meyer. I just wish I could find the love for this book as I have for the other three. :'(. (Minor spoilers) I am so mad she had a baby I really didn't want that to happen and was agreeing with Jacob the whole time...until he imprinted. I really wish he hadn't he deserves someone better than that and I was mad that he forgave Bella. Hooray for the happy ending but things always aren't happy. The book was good until we found out Bella was pregnate for sure. Maybe later I will have a better review on it but for now I am soooo dissapointed and could cry.
LOVING Breaking Dawn August 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I totally LOVED Breaking Dawn. I waiting in line, got it, rushed home, and read until I finished it. It is a little different and weird but I love it all the same. It is true that it isn't what I was expecting but it was so much more. SM's imagination kicked my butt and I was so happy that it ended the way it did. I wouldn't changed anything about this book...its an emotional rollercoaster! ENjoy :)
Not what I expected, but not bad... August 3, 2008 5 out of 14 found this review helpful
**SPOILERS**
This book had all the elements that I expected and at the same time took a very unexpected turn. On one hand, I expected Bella to become a vampire with unusual powers (I even anticipated her incredible self-control and ability to shield others like she was able to shield herself). I also expected Jacob to imprint on someone since SM is a romantic and likes Jacob too much to not give him his happy ending. Finally, the confrontation with the Volturi was expected, though very anti-climatic.
On the other hand, I did not expect Bella to get pregnant and I really didn't care for this twist (though it certainly opens the door for future books from Nessie's perspective). I, too, have heard that SM has stated that vampires cannot have children since their bodies are frozen in the moment that they die. After doing a little searching however, I found that she has also stated "Most human fluids are absent in my vampires" (Italics mine). Since Bella was still human when she got pregnant and technically fluids are not completely absent in vampires, this does not rule out the possibility of a half-vampire/half-human child. Since I did not anticipate the pregnancy, I also did not expect the changes in the characters involved. I would agree that some of the characters did not feel consistent to me (especially Bella). I am however, trying to keep in mind that she becomes another person in this book so it is reasonable to expect her character to be different in Breaking Dawn. When Bella is human, she sees herself as plain and un-extraordinary. She cannot fathom why Edward wants to be with her. When she becomes a vampire, Bella is no longer the weak human that Edward will always have to defend. I think this allows her to finally feel worthy of him and gives her the self-confidence that is absent in the early books. In addition to these changes, Bella also becomes a mother. Though not a mother myself, I know that becoming a parent has the ability to change a person in immeasurable ways and alter a person's priorities. It is true that this book does not focus so much on the love between Edward and Bella, but that is because there is finally someone else in Bella's life that she loves as deeply as Edward. I believe the reason Breaking Dawn does not focus so much on Edward and Bella's relationship is because SM is attempting to show the love that exists between a mother and her child - we already know how Bella feels about Edward and vice versa.
Was it how I would have imagine Bella and Edward's story to end? No. Did it feel rushed at times? Yes, but being a 700+ page book, I don't know how much of this was SM's choice or simply practicality and editing.
Are the harsher reviews warranted? Not in my opinion. Though this was my least favorite book in the Twilight saga, it wasn't a bad story. Overall, an okay ending to the series.
loved it! August 3, 2008 9 out of 32 found this review helpful
you knew that it wasn't going to be cut and dry or what you expected-- that's how the series has been. who could have imagined edward leaving for 2/3 of new moon??? or that bella might think she had feelings for jacob in eclipse??? i think that there are people who are going to be disappointed no matter what happens, because it is the end and there is really nowhere else for it to go. i give stephenie credit for thinking of things that i don't think ANYONE could have predicted. and THANK GOD bella ended up with edward! hahahaha.
one complaint IS that ithink a lot of people expected that bella was going to have to make more choices, give things up. scarifice some things to get others. and in real life, that is what happens. rarely, do you get everything. but in this book, it is all tied up in a little bow-- bella gets EVERYTHING she wants, and then some. jacob doesn't get hurt by her. etc etc. i love a happy ending, so i am not really complaining... i just think that it's obviously not what would happen in real life (not that vampires are real, but just the principle of the thing, about make choices and compromises).
LOVED IT! Thanks so much, Stephanie! August 3, 2008 15 out of 40 found this review helpful
I couldn't be any happier with this book. I loved everything about it. I laughed and cried. I still love the characters and Stephanie has renewed my love for reading. I thought I would have to give it up after the Harry Potter series was over. I will read anything she writes. I am one of those people who love happy endings. Nothing is more of a waste of my time reading something that has no ending, no closure or the unnecessary need to kill of good characters. I read to escape and fantisize about something, to use my imagination. If I want the harsh reality of life I will turn on the evening news. I got my son into reading the series and he can't wait to start Breaking Dawn. I highly recommend all the books in this series and can't praise them enough.
Keep up the good work Stephanie! I look forward to Midnight Sun especially and all of your other future books.
