Aiding My Quest December 14, 2005 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
I have been on a spiritual quest for 40 years always searching for enlightenment. Mr. Tolle's approach has been my focus for the last few years and I find it to be an excellent path. He has managed to translate all the truth into a clear message supported by the words of wisdom of many great spiritual teachers. It's a simple message. No need to seek enlightenment, we are already there. Always have been...always will be. The challenge is finding awareness of the actions of the ego...sometimes uncontrollable...and separating those actions from our true self which is part of the unmanifested. It's like we're Dr. Jykell (the unmanifested) and Mr. Hyde (the ego).
The concept of the New Earth is something that I have felt for a long time. We humans as a species are evolving to the next level of being where awareness of unmanifested and the ego will be more balanced as a result the insanity we see all over the planet will start to dissipate revealing The New Earth which is already there.
It Really Is Up To Us December 13, 2005 49 out of 62 found this review helpful
As former Editor of Science of Mind magazine, I've read so many books about personal evolution and most of them sound like a broken record with the same tired phrases. Eckhart Tolle's books always explore new spiritual terrain. Just as The Power of Now tempts you back into practicing the power of the moment, this new book impresses you with the urgency of personal commitment for global change. Eckhart Tolle keeps me on my spiritual path and lights a new pathway with each new book. Thank goodness for his light. Elaine Maginn Sonne, PhD, Author of Stellar Secrets
Such a beautiful communicator December 11, 2005 There are few people who really know how to address an audience. And though I do not ordinarily go for CD's of talks by authors,Eckhart Tolle always has so much substance to his talks. And, actually, I heard Tolle's talks before I read THE POWER OF NOW--which I continue to re-read every now and again. (and I never tire of that classic book!) This is a worthy and logical follow up--very well done and up to the high standard of this spiritual communicator.
So recommend, but I also enjoyed M. WIlliamson's GIFT OF CHANGE and a lesser known work, FEARLESS: DOING EXTRAORDINARY THINGS... by L. Ulatowska. Good companions to this work.
This man speaks to me... November 30, 2005 21 out of 29 found this review helpful
This book takes over from Power of Now and Realizing.... It's less concerned with active meditation (Tolle reads without the long pauses) and more with practical guidelines for tuning into the now. I've heard many readers in the past and Tolle manages to get through to me as no other. If you're "ready"...this is a great experience.
The ego is like a child.... November 29, 2005 23 out of 29 found this review helpful
I really liked the message this book offers. He writes simply what all the other messengers are trying to say. BE PRESENT with yourself. It doesn't make the pain stop, or the ego cease its function, but merely puts one into awareness of it without allowing your thoughts to carry you away into a non-existance "what if" mode.
I think of the ego like a child. This kid is kicking and screaming to have what they want any way they can get it. We don't usually allow that child to have his way, especially when you know it's not good for the child or others, so you don't take it too seriously. It will pass in a few moments. The mature adult dealing with this child may be seen as cold, uncaring, or even aloof. In reality and choice, they simply aren't going to get involved in that child's manner of behavior or expression, while still being quite aware of what's going on.
So why would we judge the immature ego in ourselves and others as anything different? Adults do the same thing as children, they just find more "acceptable" ways of dealing with what they want and don't want in life. Either way you slice it, it's all ego. And Tolle is pointing out how we unconsciously allow our immature egos to take over and perpetuate through knee-jerk reactions, or contemplated 'what if' thoughts of what could or should be. Just be present, aware, attentive to your own self. (Self awareness) It keeps everything inside you in check, smooth-going, less complicated, clearer. Why would you bother, you ask? Because eventually we get sick of it and want the pain to stop. We start to grow up.
Tolle is gently explaining to us how to grow up. The "doing" is up to us.
Furthermore, I didn't use to understand Tolle's "pain-body" euphemism. After reading this book I began to get a clue. I have noticed that when I am around negative people that they tend to make negative things happen around them, orchestrate negative reactions, or simple leave a "bleh" feeling behind or with them. From what Tolle says, and it makes sense, that this is part of or IS the pain body spreading itself. You can even notice it in yourself at times; looking to start trouble because we're miserable for a moment. Again, if we are aware, we can choose not to feed it. You'll find the misery pointless and a time waster.
I figure it this way, we have at least 3 choices with almost everything we encounter in life. We can get totally involved while submersing ourselves to satisfy some idea/belief that we want or need an experience, or we can be present without taking it personally, or simply walk away. But how can we know those choices unless we become conscious and present with ourselves and see it as it is inside and out?
And for you those who think Tolle is a "MAN", and all this is stemming from his male ego, try Byron Katie. She says the same thing AND walks you through simple steps of "how". A message is a message, and a story is simply a story; Just a matter of HOW one is willing to accept it.
