2 out of 5 stars Lots of chanting, almost all chanting - not for me   November 3, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Soul Wisdom is basically a book of chants used for healing. An audio CD comes with it, which is also chanting, and not in a pleasing, relaxing tone.

For those who are into chanting, this may be for you. This simply is not a belief I hold to.

3 out of 5 stars Soul Wisdom includes some interesting techniques, but the theology may get in the way for some.   November 1, 2008
I chose this book because I am interested in meditation and, above all, in wisdom. I was not expecting to find such specific techniques, and I found them helpful, especially the Soul Singing and so forth, which was very new to me. I was not expecting, though, to find a book that was so explicitly religious. Readers whose world view coincides with Dr. Zhi Gang Sha's will enjoy his matter-of-fact stories about the Divine and other celestial matters, and so will those of us who can cherish different world views and the delightful people who bear them.

This book comes with a CD of the author singing a song that is meant to improve the health of the brain and spinal cord. It did seem to resonate with me, but the sound of the words reminded me of another song, which I did find to be a bit distracting.

If you are willing to accept the religious content or to overlook it, you will find this book to be quite interesting.

1 out of 5 stars This didn't work for me   October 31, 2008
The soul system described in this book didn't do anything for me. I could see aspects of other healing and enlightenment techniques buried in the text: meditation, chanting, music, visualization, etc. But the overly complex and repetitive presentation lost me.

The book describes "soul language", "soul song", "soul movement", "soul tapping", and "soul dance". "Soul language" involves repeating a sequence of number over and over, faster and faster, until you begin to speak in your "soul language". You then "translate" what you have said by asking for divine guidance and then saying whatever comes to your mind.

The other techniques involve singing or moving in whatever way the divine moves you. I'm sure that spontaneous singing or movement, preceded or followed by requests or interpretation from the divine, would work for some. But it didn't work for me.

4 out of 5 stars Don't knock it if you don't try it   October 31, 2008
I'm aiming this review at those like myself who have a deep interest and some acceptance of spiritual matters, but remain wary of what I consider a "nut fringe", the cultish new age writings on souls, angels, and the like. Otherwise, I recommend this to those deeper into such reading than I am and advise those who have no more than a passive interest to look elsewhere. Now that I hopefully have the attention of those at my intermediate level, I'll tell you my experience with this book. From the outset, I considered this too far out for my tastes. However, I decided that it would be only fair to read this carefully and follow at least the author's instructions in the first portion of the book, that on ""Soul language". I seriously and trustingly followed the advice on chanting a series of numbers in chinese. Yes, I felt rather foolish at first, but with nobody but my cat in earshot followed the suggested regime which includes acceleration of the chanting. Before this, I have felt that there is something to chanting because it does cause vibrations within the body that could have beneficial effects. I have at times seemed to reduce and eliminate mild pains such as muscle aches, headaches, etc. During the period I spent with the increasingly vigorous chanting, I suddenly thought I felt something happening between my ears. At this point, I should mention I am quite hard of hearing, with considerable diffficulties in distinguishing syllables. At the end of this, I experienced a feeling of removal of some kind of blockage. I did consider the possibility that my imagination was overworking itself, and still don't discount that ossibility. However at lunch time I realized I was understanding much of the conversation around me far better than usual. No, not 100%, but still far better, and also was more confident in entering into the conversation. I repeated the process the following day (but haven't yet today) and continued to experience the improvement plus the feeling that something is happening in my chest and lung areas (I do smoke). Now, I haven't experienced any desire to speak any "soul language" as suggested by the author. That's a bit far out for me. But I can't deny a feeling of more energy and well-being. Again, I don't discount the power of my imagination. However, I am planning on continuing the chanting for at least as long as I feel I am benefitting from it.So the bottom line is that I do recommend this book to thse with at least moderate interest in spiritual matters, but I do urge you to give the chanting regime a chance even if it seems competely foolish and useless to you. You might, like me, be surprised at the result which of course will likely be different for you, but equally beneficial to your feeling of overall well being.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual wisdom for the soul   October 27, 2008

I really like this book and find that it is much more complex and interesting than I thought it would be.

Despite this, I would have to warn those who are afraid of New Age or the Metaphysical -- if you don't like these subjects, I would not recommend this book. Born-again Christians and fundamentalists probably would not like this book either. People with extremely negative outlooks, as well as atheists, probably would not enjoy this book either. It's sad to say, but all people with the tendency to be close-minded and who have already formed their opinion about anything and everything, would probably not like this book.

For those who consider themselves spiritual and not religious, this book will most likely be one that you consider an important addition to the classics of your library. I would highly recommend this book to those who are seeking ways in which to elevate and heal the self and soul.
