The best book of its type May 16, 2001 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
David Allen is one of those synthetic (no, not artificial but putting things together) geniuses who seem to arise every now and then to remind us how wonderful we could be if only we did a little more and how easy it is to do it. Well, it's not quite easy because it requires attention (a rare and expensive commodity), but boy does it pay off!! What this book does is tell you (simply and clearly)how to take control of the effort and attention that you normally spread out over time and tasks. It then shows you how to use your time in a way that guarantees that you will get (much) more done with (much) less effort and will sya goodbye forever to those loose ends of undone and barely-remembered tasks that gnaw away at the edge of consciousness. The system set forth in this book is elegantly simple and, if you are willing to discipline yourself enough to do it, foolproof. When I discovered David Allen a few years ago, the simplicity, elegance, and deep truth of his teaching stunned me. Applying it to my life was even more of a shock. It showed how shallow and fragile the (many) other time management systems I had applied were by comparison. If you are ready to take control of your life and build it to a higher level of efficiency and ease, this is an indispensable tool. If you read it carefully and act on it, you will be amazed at what you accomplish and how easy those accomplishments are. The book is written in an easy to read style, almost as if the warm-hearted narrator were speaking to you in person. Its layout is crisp and inviting with pointed quotations and headlines placed alongside the text. Buy it. Read it. Turn it into action.
This System Will Revolutionize Your Life -- Personal + Work May 11, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Wow!!! I just heard David Allen lecture at a conference I attended. Amazing stuff! If you want to truly reduce your stress by having a practical way to "organize" your life and work there is no better way to do it than David's system. It is unique--I've never heard anything like it before. As a result I'm going to buy this book and recommend it to everyone. This is a MUST read!
Clearing The Clutter March 17, 2001 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
I have read several books on getting and staying organized and worked with a number of paper based and computer based solutions. I've attended more than one seminar. Some "systems" have helped me be more focused and productive with important or essential tasks. But none provided a way to handle all of the clutter and masses of information and secondary tasks that often overwhelm my desk, my mind, and my life. This book not only showed me effective ways to organize masses of info and the many sectors of my life, but perhaps even more importantly it showed me how to get started - which as anyone who has ever taken a stab at self-improvement knows - is often the most difficult step.
A book that delivers! March 12, 2001 8 out of 13 found this review helpful
I have worked with David Allen, and I have attended his seminar. I assumed that reading the book might be difficult because I might know too much about the content. Not so - the book reinforced what I knew of his principles. However, it also delivered many new insights.Even if you only take away one of David's philosophies from the book, the "next action" decision, it will justify reading the entire book. I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants to improve their productivity.
Once in a while a book will change your life March 8, 2001 45 out of 51 found this review helpful
I was looking for a time managment book. I didn't find one. Instead, I found David Allen's STRESS managment book (my description), "Getting Things Done". With a book like this I normally read it through once, and then impliment the system if I agree with it. I'm almost finished my first read through, and with NO exageration, my life has already changed. Even my wife has noticed how much less stress I project... and I haven't even implimented the system yet! David's method applies to processes as small as managing your inbox to managing your life goals. Don't expect to be overewhlemed. He takes you step by step through a process of implimentation that you can apply at any level, and see the results right away. There's nothing psycological about it. These are PRACTICAL steps that he has you take, which work. I'll admit that while reading the implimentation section, some of the logistics didn't make sense to me, UNTIL I got to the last steps. Then it all came together. Again, I want to stress... I haven't even begun the full imoplimentation, and already things have changed. (David reccomends putting aside the specific time to do the implimenation, which I have set aside for next week. I can't wait to experience the full results.) Buy this book. Set aside the time to read , and impliment the program. And start relaxing!!
