The Art of Racing In The Rain - Great Book! July 13, 2008

This is a wonderful book! I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did the 2 friends who also read it. Written from the point of view of a dog, the main character, it touched on such varied topics as car racing, where dogs go when they die, the commitments of marriage and family in the face of tragedy, and the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity.

This is the best book I've read since Marley and Me. I know, we're all comparing The Art of Racing in the Rain with Marley and Me. Well, let me tell you, they are not comparable except for the way they reach the human heart from an animal's point of view. Marley and Me is great as is The Art of Racing In The Rain, which takes the art of anthropomorphizing into its greatest realm but in a delicious manner that makes animal lovers and researchers alike want to come home and "spoon" with their favorite dog.
Enzo grabbed me from the end of the first page when I learn he was sitting in a pool of his own urine on the eve of his death, only to try to get his human life owner to allow him to die so that he (Enzo) could go on to become a human, and so that his owner (Denny) could go on to find his fortune in life.
Here is a dog that has learned everything he knows from cable TV and that envies thumbs (opposable digits) and wants more than anything to come back in his next reincarnation as a human because that is what the Mongolians believe.
Enzo. You can't go wrong reading this book. If you don't like it, I'm sure there are other books we could steer you towards.

I laughed and cried while reading this book. Rooted for Enzo and his family throughout the read. This is such a great book, told with humor and humanity and I highly recommend this to any pet parent who loves their pets and just knows your buddy is more human than most humans. Definitely recommend this book.
