5 out of 5 stars The true story of a real hero!   January 4, 2009

It is amazing what one man can do. If only our government could understand the message in this book and instead of using money for bombs, bring education to the children in the areas of the world we're fighting.
Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time

5 out of 5 stars Give this book to everyone you know   January 3, 2009
I've just finished Three Cups of Tea and, like others, am moved by Greg's story. I would encourage everyone who reads this book to tell everyone you know about it, buy a copy for them, pass your copy on if you can't afford to buy one for everybody, bring up the topic at dinner, direct everybody you know to [...], basically SPREAD THE WORD. This guy is doing amazing stuff that we are all capable of. It especially important for Americans to read this book. If anyone else is like me, I don't trust the media as far as I can throw them. This being said, I try to stay away from the news because I don't feel that it provides an accurate view of world affairs. After reading Three Cups of Tea, I feel I have a better understanding of the events and reasons that led to the events prior to and post 9/11. I also feel that I have begun to understand a culture that has been subject to much unfair negativity. As Americans we are a bit sheltered, I feel, from the rest of the world and we rely too heavily on mainstream news media to get educated about people and places overseas. It's books like this that help to fully reveal what mainstream news media cannot. I am incredibly inspired and moved by Greg's courage. He had no idea what he was doing and let his heart lead him, or so it seems. This is a lesson that we, as a people, can all benefit from no matter who we are and what baggage our national heritage may carry. READ IT and then pass it on.

Just finished the book, looking forward to reading it again. Dr. Greg is an example of what can be accomplished by anyone with incredible commitment, drive, and compassion. He embodies what all major religions teach, but so few of us put into practice. Also just read some of the very few poor ratings on this site. While I personally felt the style helped to give some idea of the unimaginable challenges and exhilarations,it's a shame that some reviewers can't look past their own need to criticize others, or petty biases in writing styles, so they can see a bigger picture. The life and courage of all involved in the telling of this story should be an inspiration to everyone. This is a must read for anyone and everyone, regardless of politics, religion, or nationality. It is the story of the impact that one person can have on the lives of others, given straighforward and unwavering motives and energy.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book!   January 3, 2009

I just finished this book and I had to write a review. This book is, by far, the best and most informative work I have ever read. I am so moved by Greg Mortenson and his work. I think this book should be a must read for everyone, including and especially members of the government. I hope President -elect Obama has his copy!

Mountain climber Greg Mortenson failed to summit K2, but instead rechanneled his energies into building schools for girls in Pakistan. In this endeavor, he climbs a different mountain, one perhaps just as arduous. The mountain of challenges included lack of funds, lack of resources, political, ethnic and religious conflicts and the emerging backdrop of the global war on terror.

"It's better to light one lamp than to curse the darkness."

Greg Mortenson has lit more than one lamp and his energies serve as a daunting example of how one man can make a difference for the better!
