Epic December 26, 2008 Very interesting story. Apocalyptic. Epic. Tragic. Hard to follow at times. The artwork is very well done and at time feels like you are watching a film montage. Has a high re-read value.
Amazing Graphic Novel, A Must Read December 23, 2008 Watchmen is often noted as the greatest comic book of all time, I completely agree, it is also more than that, it is one of the greatest stories ever, If you are a comic fan, or pop culture fan, this is a MUST have.
Amazing. Simply amazing. December 21, 2008 This novel is nothing short of epic. You can't put it down. I will read it many many times.
The only "graphic novel" I truly enjoy rereading December 21, 2008 Well, I have read the big three from '86: Maus, Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen. And while they are all clearly a cut above anything else I have been able to access in "graphic novel" form (aside from, possibly, Jimmy Corrigan), Watchmen is easily the most fun to reread, reexamine, reevaluate.
Politically, it is possible to criticize this work as naive. Leftist paranoia seems more immature and emotionally regressive the older I get. Yet, that doesn't stop me from being objective in my review of the craft evident throughout.
The first time I read Watchmen was also the first time that a comic ever completely subsumed my attention. Rorschach's psychiatric evaluation alone qualifies as one of the most riveting sections of anything I have read.
Anyone curious due to the upcoming film hype would be well-served to go ahead and buy this book. I have the cheap paperback version with the limited color-palette common to comics of the time and I've never worried about "upgrading." The visuals stun and the narrative invention is clearly apparent.
So do yourself a favor. Quit reading about it and click "order now."
Words can't describe it! December 20, 2008 Watchmen is something that can only be expressed visually, because in writing it sounds like a bad version of the DC Universe. Read it cover to cover, and it might just change your view on many topics. There isn't anything that it doesn't touch on, ranging from general politics to rape. The movie may or may not be good, but Watchmen is something to be treasured forever. My friends and I can't stop talking about it, and it will make ten times more sense if you read it twice. The characters are perfect symbols of every aspect of society. The symbolism is off the charts. If this still doesn't sound good to you, I guess nothing will.
